Batteries: Five Trends to Watch in 2024 🧵 1/ Too Much of a Good Thing: Production capacity for li-ion type batteries will reach 1.5 Terawatt Hours in 2024, an increase of 42% year on year… The problem is, we don’t need that many batteries yet! Factory utilisation rates will fall from 80% to 74%, but they’ll still be a huge surplus. This means cheap and plentiful batteries, mostly LFP-type from China, will be widely available. These cells aren’t typically suitable for Electric Vehicles (EVs) as they don’t have the required warranties to go into a vehicle. Home battery anyone? They’ll be very cheap! Indeed, there’s about 300 GWh of battery cell production capacity that won’t have a home. Almost all of it’s in China. Outside of China most batteries are already sold under long-term contract. Companies like NorthVolt, LG Chem and Panasonic have order books years and years out for EV batteries and will be largely shielded from the mammoth oversupply.

Still looking for topics to discuss with family over Christmas? 🎄 What about how discharge duration affects arbitrage profits for energy storage? 🔋🪫🔋 Jokes aside, here you see that across major world markets, profits drop sharply when moving beyond 4-hour duration. For example, you can expect an increase of ~$5-20 per kW per year when increasing a 1-hour to a 2-hour system in Europe. However, if you’re planning an 8-hour system and wonder whether a 9-hour system is better, your increase is only ~$1 /kW-year. Given that an extra kWh of lithium-ion system costs around $140 at the moment, it's not a good trade-off (yet). The caveat of this analysis is that it's based on 2012-2019 data. So, developers, operators and investors in energy storage systems need to ask: 1⃣ How frequent are events that temporarily increase power price volatility like COVID in 2020 and extreme natural gas prices in 2022? 2⃣ How will this relationship change towards 2025/2030 as more renewables increase power price volatility more generally? Now, that’s something worth discussing, isn’t it?! This is a quite misleading credit grab imo. Penn treated Dr. Karikó poorly while she was there, pulling her off tenure track to adjunct status in 1995 and not reinstating her in 2013 after the key Nobel papers were published. Bad judgment then, backpedaling now.
