For five years now, the Newham Data program through @NewhamLondon has established the borough as a hub for London’s growing digital, data, and AI economy, harnessing tools to improve public service, expand economic opportunity, and build residential skills for the future. At @ucl's @UCLEast, along with our partners, we celebrated this milestone and the initiative's success and launched the Newham Data Strategy to reinforce inclusive growth and further strengthen public services.

Strong data collection and effective use of that data help cities make informed decisions to improve residents' lives. In Newham, the borough has created a new strategy to turn data into action – aiming to improve performance, deliver services efficiently, use AI responsibly, and build trust with the community. The COVID-19 pandemic led to disruptions in learning, fewer social interactions, and a rise in mental health issues, significantly affecting young people. While all young individuals worldwide faced these challenges, disadvantaged youth were hit the hardest. Providing support for young people is vital for recovery, which prompted the development of the Mentoring Quality Framework. Currently, nearly 1,000 local youth programs and organizations use the tool, demonstrating why high quality services provide impactful mentoring experiences. bloombg.org/3Lo2d8T

The City of Milan is expanding its commitment to creating safer, more walkable routes to schools for students. As part of the city’s broader Piazza Aperte program, officials gathered in Plaza Marino to open a new “Play Places” space transforming the area into a safer, more welcoming environment for children and families.

In the last 4 years, more than 100,000 young Londoners have accessed high-quality mentoring support through the New Deal for Young People mission.
