Whilst much of the focus this summer has been on incomings, Manchester City are also working through a number of significant contract negotiations behind the scenes. The situations involving Jérémy Doku and Abdukodir Khusanov are currently progressing positively and there is optimism from all parties that agreements will be reached. Josko Gvardiol's renewal is more complicated. His representatives have made no secret of the fact that there is significant interest from both La Liga and the Bundesliga and have used that interest as leverage in negotiations around salary and agent commission. That said, Enzo Maresca views Gvardiol as a cornerstone of his project and there remains confidence within the club that an agreement will ultimately be reached before the close of the transfer window. The most complex discussion remains Rodri. His representatives are seeking a new long term agreement which would place him on a top line salary for the duration of a five year contract. At present, Manchester City are not prepared to meet those demands. Negotiations remain ongoing and the club's preference is still to find a compromise that works for all parties. However, City are also comfortable with the prospect of allowing Rodri to enter the final stages of his contract if necessary. The view internally is that, should an agreement not be possible, retaining him through to the summer of 2027 would provide sufficient time to execute a succession plan for arguably the most difficult position in the squad to replace. The expectation remains that discussions will continue throughout the summer.
