Voter turnout jumped 129 percent. Every single council member who had voted yes lost in a landslide. A 70-year-old first-time candidate beat an 8-year incumbent by 40 percentage points. Vultures eat anthrax, botulism, rabies, and cholera for breakfast. Their stomach acid is among the most corrosive in the animal kingdom, with a pH around 1, low enough to dissolve the bones, hide, and pathogens of dead animals that would kill almost anything else. A vulture eating a diseased carcass isn't a vector for disease, it's a terminus. The disease chain ends in the vulture's gut, and that's pretty hardcore. When vulture populations crashed in India in the 1990s, rotting livestock carcasses sat where vultures used to clean them. Feral dogs and rats took over the cleanup, both of which actually do spread rabies. Researchers later linked the vulture collapse to roughly 500,000 deaths in India over the following decade. The same collapse is now underway in sub-Saharan Africa. Six of eleven African vulture species are threatened with extinction, primarily from poisoned poaching baits. The animals nobody finds cute are doing more public health work than most of the species we actively protect.

Runaway horse found collecting orphan animals after miscarriage. A Montana rancher thought his mare had completely broken after losing her baby. For three days, she cried, barely slept, and refused to go near the barn where it happened. Then on the fourth day, she disappeared.Weeks later, the rancher saw a news report about a loose horse being caught on trail cameras with different orphaned animals. One camera showed her standing over a lost fawn. Another showed tiny fox kits walking beside her. Experts were confused until the rancher recognized her markings and called in. That’s when they realized she wasn’t just wandering. After losing her own baby, the mare had been searching the woods for babies with no mother. When rescuers finally found her, she was lying in a field with an orphaned fawn curled against her legs. The rancher said, “She didn’t run because she was broken. She ran because she still had love left to give.”

About twenty years ago, in a rural neighbourhood on the edge of a town in Texas in the southern United States, a retired railroad worker called Eugene Bostick noticed something happening on his dead-end street. People were driving up at night, opening their car doors, and leaving their unwanted dogs behind. Eugene and his older brother Corky lived at the end of that road with a horse barn and 11 acres of land. The dogs would wander up to them once the cars were gone. So the brothers started feeding them. Then taking them to the vet. Then keeping them. Within a few years they had nine dogs, all former strays, all now theirs. Eugene wanted to take them out. Nine dogs on nine leads wasn’t going to work. One day he saw a man towing a row of small carts behind a tractor and an idea hit him. He was, in his own words, a pretty good welder. He cut openings into a row of plastic barrels, attached wheels, linked them together, and hooked the whole thing to the back of his small farm tractor. A dog train. One dog per barrel. Names painted on the sides. Twice a week, the dogs would hear the tractor start up and come running. Eugene would drive them around the local lanes, into the woods, down to the creek. Neighbours would stop their cars to watch. A photo of the whole convoy went viral in 2015 and the story spread to newsrooms around the world. Corky passed in 2020 at 91. Eugene was 86 by then. The two of them had been quietly running their stretch of road as an animal sanctuary for about thirty years by the end. When asked once why he kept doing it, Eugene said simply, “I’ll keep it going as long as I can. The dogs have a great time. They really enjoy it.”

I liked football when a ref could make a mistake every now and again, we’d talk about it that night and after MOTD we’d move on. We’d all accept that mistakes happen, what we have now is just total nonsense and has ruined the game for me
