"ALLEGEDLY" DOES NOT SHIELD THE MEDIA
Akani Retirement Fund Administrators has won a Johannesburg High Court ruling against Independent Media for publishing defamatory articles.
Judge Shanaaz Mia ordered the media group to remove the articles and social media posts, issue an apology within two days, and pay Akani's legal costs for two counsels.
Damages will be assessed later.
The court found the reports unfounded, malicious, and in breach of journalistic ethics, as Independent Media failed to verify claims or give Akani a proper chance to respond.
Akani chairman Zamani Letjane (pictured) hailed the verdict as a lesson for South African media on fair reporting.
The case sets a precedent that using "alleged" does not shield publishers from liability for harmful, unverified stories.

@ThabisoMishack I agree man, we can finally see real service delivery in and round Tshwane, from townships to suburbs and I believe it is because the finances of the city are moving in the right direction. They are trying to stop all that progress by attacking this guy.

To destabilise Tshwane, this is the department or leader you need to take out first because, finance leadership is key to every successful metro

@eugene_modise @CityTshwane If we all were to listen to allegations about officials and expect them to be suspended or fired every time something is said then we will never have officials in office. This gentleman has issued proof and the city has cleared him many times. Let’s let SIU do its job.
