May I humbly disagree. “Battling” insurance assumes that there is a fighting chance.
Insurers set the rules, break the rules, and at worst, settle years later (after most practices —not to mention patients —can’t float the cash to survive a prolonged lawsuit/appeal process).
We have lost.

@KartaliasMD I've had many physicians treat laboratory staff with disdain assuming they only have HS diplomas and OTJ training when they have BS, MS, and doctoral degrees. Respect goes both ways.

@letslookatdata Yes, it can. If the patient has +TPPA with AMS, everything else is negative, other workup negative, it's likely neurosyphilis, especially if their in no documentation of tx or undertreatment of previous infection.

If your patient's TP-PA is +, RPR is neg, and they have altered mental status, a CSF VDRL is the test for neurosyphilis. RPRs can be negative in neurosyphilis, but once the TP-PA is +, it is generally + for life. Thanks for coming to my TedTalk. #DCLS #lab4life #DiagnosticError
