@Boaly66Rob

Dad, husband, uncle, and fan of Middlesbrough FC. My (mostly lefty) opinions are my own but not so entrenched that I can't be persuaded otherwise.

@mehdirhasan British person here. How (historically I suppose) has America got itself into a situation where partisan judges are the norm? It just seems crazy.

Might be time to accept that people are more energised by hate than hope.

@Baddiel Cynicism, hate and their relatives don't require much energy. Things like enthusiasm or love do. Too many people are emotionally lazy and supported in this by SM algorithms

Also that new media is more powerful than old. It just is. And, as it happens, really thrives on hate.

@JanAageFjortoft Jan, where were all these clubs when he was at Coventry? Any fan of a Championship club could have told you he was the real deal.

@utb_smith Yeah, frankly any sort of business. You have (say) a 30% margin with normal staff and 5% with agency. Who would refuse the 5% from the extra business?

I was at this game. This is where I got lost and Sir Bobby Robson found me. I’d wandered off to collect autographs and took a few wrong turns. “Don’t worry son, we’ll find your dad” 🙏

@utb_smith I think the point is that if the successful coaches at the top of the German and other top leagues featured no Germans, they still wouldn't appoint a non-German.

@untypicalboro We have a problem that our 'elite' clubs only want managers with 'elite' club experience. Inevitably that means they come from abroad. Nonetheless I don't think that medals and trophy thing applies to international football anyway

The lack of a national system for training high quality technically proficient, respected coaches is a real issue. Those technocrats have been sneered at for decades (the clipboards, badges, power-points, data etc). There's your problem, not where you play 'Trent'.

No English manager has ever won the Premier League. Or the Champions League. The last to win the European Cup was in 1984. No English manager has won the Bundesliga. Or Serie A since 1950, La Liga since 1985. Or even the English top flight since 1992. #JustSaying #Tuchel #England

@untypicalboro I was in the Holgate that day and went home after a bit of a sing song. But the diehards were rewarded a bit later when the players came back out in their bathrobes to wave to the crowd.

#OnThisBoroDay - 1976: #Boro are top of Division One for the first time since Dec 1950 after a 1-0 home win over Norwich. Graeme Souness netted late in a ding-dong game as Jack Charlton's team took advantage of rivals' being off because of international call-ups.

You can choose only 1. No ifs, buts, maybes, you can chose one completely or the other completely, so save yourself the whatabouttery. A. You become a pro footballer for your hated rivals. You play 10 years for them and become a club legend. You'll have earned £10m in your career. B. You become a pro footballer for the club you love. Your first game, you start at home, full house, you get the " one of our own" sung but 5 minutes in you have a career ending injury and never play again. Ever. You will have earned £200k in your time as a pro. Chose one. And don't lie.

@pkelso I didn't know that much about him other than the US ambassador thing and the later BBC role. He strikes me as much in the (perceived?) mould of David Owen - name checked in the obit'

Terrific read with an unimprovable anecdote "When a subeditor once complained he could not understand what Jay had written, he was loftily informed the column was only intended to be understood by three people – two Treasury civil servants and the governor of the Bank of England"

@StanCollymore This is a directive for fans. We hate it when oppo players do it and frankly ain't to keen on our own doing it either. The 'refs need to be consistent' argument can be applied to any laws of the game and long applied interpretations

Players have no business kicking the ball away, ever. Whether that's to get back in shape, to kick the ball where the ref has pointed, whatever bizarre reason supporters make up watching TV. Leave the fucking ball alone when the ref blows. It's not rocket science.
