@KelzActually That’s because he was a nothing villain who shouldn’t have been in the first and only Justice league movie!

@SupesBatsy It’s entirely fine and actually faithful to the comics. Plus not putting a bunch of green cgi slop on it actually amplifies the otherworldly feeling of a man flying IMO

@kidomaki_real That’s how these things always go. Man of Steel was a reaction to Superman Returns. Batman Begins was a reaction to Batman & Robin. Congrats on understanding art

One constant problem James Gunn’s DCU runs into is overcorrection. You can tell that every decision they make is based on past critiques of prior iterations. First it was Superman, and now it’s Lanterns.

@damiebi10 That’s beautiful art but people don’t actually look like that and it’s unfair and absurd to hold them to that kind of expectation

Another one is where they say "Half the prequels are dull scenes of Natalie Portman sitting on a couch delivering the worst performance of her life" and you check and it's all the most beautiful, emotionally affecting images of Natalie Portman that have ever been put to screen:

Of all wrong headed criticisms of George Lucas, I don't get where "he has to have characters always say how they feel!" comes from. I get why people call his dialogue bad. They're wrong, but I get it. But to say he's unable to do it without is baffling. youtube.com/watch?v=1gpXMG…

Another habit Andor fans have is gushing over images of characters framed within a central portal, because they have a cargo cultist's understanding of what constitutes "good cinematography." All of these shots are technically fine-looking, but I think it's obvious that the shot from Attack of the Clones is the only one that is artistically notable. It is the only image here that possesses an ineffable energy and a charge that cannot be reduced to mere technical polish.

I am well aware of DEI casting and I generally think it's distracting, but Will Smith never felt like he was casted to fill in a black guy into a role. In his prime he genuinely felt like a singular charismatic movie star you WANTED for their persona, like Cruise or Clooney. You don't need a black guy in Men In Black. You need Will Smith. If anything he seemed to represent a post racial America where his personality felt fully owned and represented everyone, just with a little more urban spark. He was the Michael Jordan of box office hits, winning for everyone. It is only in his later career he started defining himself as Just Black, taking on specific racial roles that frankly did not need him. Many black men can play slaves, not many can play Will Smith. There was a parting of the ways with not only white people, but all the other races, as he felt he needed to represent the Black Man Story more. That's his perogative as an artist and human, but as a child of the 80s and 90s I miss the Will Smith that killed a bunch of aliens on a jet fighter like any good American would do. Come back, Will. We miss you.

We think of Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt as the last movie stars but before his cancellation, Will Smith was arguably the biggest star in the world. He was the normal one - until he wasn't. He still could be the biggest movie star - if he can be perceived as normal again.

Neither Shakespeare nor Homer are documentaries, but I do think they’re different in ways that are meaningful for the question of casting. The settings of Shakespeare’s place are much more auxiliary to the human drama. Homer is immersing us in a different world.
Matthew Yglesias@mattyglesias

By the same token, Denzel Washington plays Macbeth because the American dramatic tradition lays claim to the legacy of Shakespeare so great American actors challenge themselves to play these roles. It’s not a documentary about Scotland. youtu.be/HM3hsVrBMA4?si…

In the last few days I have criticized Andor (saying that it sucks and is against everything Star Wars is meant to be, which is objectively true) and also poked fun at both the OT and PT (calling out ROTS' awkward Padme death and jokingly suggesting that it was ROTJ's fault for not perfectly syncing up with it.) The responses were fascinating. PT fans: "Hey it's not necessarily a continuity error because Leia could have had visions from the Force or maybe she mistakenly remembered her stepmom or a devoted handmaiden." OT fans: "Uh, ROTJ was made first so you can't blame that one dude." Andor fans: "REEEEEEEEEEEE, you're a boomer! You're a child! You can't handle anything mature or good! All Star Wars sucks EXCEPT Andor! And of course you're a Christian which totally explains your terrible opinions, behold my pronouns and despair!!!!" Wow. OT and PT fans: Keep being awesome. 👍 Andor fans: Yikes. I'm very glad we don't see eye to eye. Keep enjoying your pro-cold blooded murder, ends justify the means, DEI, ANTIFA-esque, anti-Star Wars I guess. Modern Hollywood/Disney has totally got your back.
Kevin Lamb@KevinLamb74

ERROR: Fans call out Return of the Jedi blunder during scene where Leia says she remembers her mother, despite Padme clearly dying in Revenge of the Sith while Leia is barely a minute or two old. Should ROTJ be forgiven for this obvious continuity error or does it disqualify Episode VI from being considered canon?

@desert_starr_57 I think there’s a throughline in the Snape casting and the Helen casting which is not mentioned here which is the real reason you’re mad, and it’s not “authenticity”

Like WB is doing with Snape in Harry Potter. Said it was going to be as close to the books as possible, then swap the one character that really shouldn't be swapped for a number of reasons. At least Helen is not a major character.
