“You only have to ask a stupid question once if you’re alert.” Jordan Peterson shared a piece of advice he’s given his daughter Mikhaila many times. When she first started running his companies, she didn’t know much about business and was still recovering from health issues, which made it easy for others to try to take advantage. But Mikhaila has a real strength: she’s willing to ask the “stupid” questions. Peterson’s wisdom is simple and powerful — if you ask honestly, about 80% of the people in the room probably have the same question but are too afraid to speak up. Once someone answers it, you never have to ask that question again. You’re no longer “stupid” on that topic. Keep asking stupid questions while you’re still humble enough to do so, and eventually you stop being stupid. It’s such a refreshing reminder about humility, courage, and how real learning actually happens. Have you ever gained a big insight by daring to ask the “stupid” question no one else would?
