A6 A surprise for me was how much it meant to have my daughter Meredith read the book for the audio version. She did a brilliant and funny job as she inserted her own quips ("Really, Mom, could you not find any researchers who have single-syllable last names!") #liftingliteracy

As a total aside, I'm THRILLED to be doing this after just getting the call from my oncologist that my new scans from this morning revealed that I'm still in remission! YES! #liftingliteracy #g2great #FCancer

@kasal_finley A4 Yes, and most words point to things, people, ideas that exist outside of the text. They need to be able to make those connections, and do it honestly, in search of something like truth or accuracy.

A4: because if they don’t have the background info/knowledge then they won’t be blue to make meaning even if they know all the words. They need to be able connect the words to something they know. #liftingliteracy

A4: I was just writing about this today. A couple years ago I assigned a reading on Chernobyl and my HS seniors (born in 2003) looked at me completely confused. They had no real context. It was a reminder that I’m old & that student have to have background info #liftingliteracy

@KyleneBeers A3 Sometimes I wonder if I'm pushable. . . I look at my own reading behaviors and I see laziness too often. Perhaps kids need to be more reflective about their own reading.

A3 Once @BobProbst and I were in a MS where the principal had labeled kids as "pushables" (kids who with a little push could make a higher state test score) or "slippables" (kids who might slip to a lower score). We left there so sad. #liftingliteracy #g2great

@KyleneBeers A2 Part of the problem with the science of reading is that it is neither science nor about reading.

Helping young students learn the letter-sound code doesn't need to be debated. AND recognizing that reading is FAR more than simply sound-out words is not debatable. Why we spend time arguing these things is beyond me. #liftingliteracy #g2great

@mrbgilson A2 Beyond decoding, reading involves weighing relationship of words to things outside the text (thus honesty and truth are important), raising questions that the text provokes, taking a stand on issues brought up by the text, and more.

@KyleneBeers A1 Someone once said that "writing is the technology of extended thought." Perhaps we can't think complex thoughts without being able to read.

This is such a smart statement. We are "wired" to walk, to talk, to see, to taste . . . but our brains are not wired to read. Instruction is imperative. #liftingliteracy #g2great

A1: Most people have to be taught to read, our brains are not set up to read naturally. That is all the more reason that teaching reading in schools is critical. #liftingliteracy

And the importance of having an independent reader, one who doesn't simply accept the visions offered by his group, his party, his religion. A responsible reader.#g2great
Kylene Beers@KyleneBeers
When Bob and I began #ForgedbyReading, we thought we were writing a book about how to run independent reading programs. The more we wrote, the more we realized the problem is the program. We needed to write about the power of independent reading. #g2great

A7 Sometimes I think that reshaping self is a necessary (but occasionally unpleasant) first step in reshaping society. #g2great
English

A7 The big problem is that reshaping oneself may require letting go of treasured beliefs or visions and replacing them with one less comfortable but more defensible. #g2great

Just realized. . . . I probably didn't need to put on a tie for this. #g2great

A6 The problems of the world are often the problems of our literature and nonfiction. If we let kids seek relevance, and speculate about possibilities, then they may be attacking the problems that matter to them. #g2great

A5 I didn’t make clear to students the importance of responsible literacy, since literacy enable them to shape themselves and the world around them. #g2great

A4 If we value lacrosse we may reject football. Sorry -- that a personal and irrelevant comment. #g2great
