Since 2024, the Arizona Quail Initiative has brought together state and federal agencies, private landowners, and local Quail Forever chapters to restore quail habitat across the state. Tackling invasive woody encroachment, building water sources, and even constructing small rock dams to keep water on the land longer. The goals are big: 30,000 acres of restored habitat, water improvements reaching 100,000+ acres, and new access to landlocked public lands. Quail Fact Friday! July is all about survival. Young bobwhites are growing fast, but they're vulnerable, especially to heat and predators. That's why "bugging areas," or patches of weedy, open ground loaded with insects and shade, matter so much. If chicks can move easily, stay cool, avoid predators, and find food, they make it. If not, they don't.

Pheasant Fact Friday! Whether it be winter's blizzards and windchills, spring's heavy rains, summer's hail storms, or fall's ice storms — weather plays a large part in determining the size of the pheasant population. In July, hail is a major concern. Such storms can kill both adult and young pheasants, and can leave a long path devoid of any birds. Fortunately hail storms rarely cover more than a couple townships, and those pheasants outside the storm's path will move into and repopulate the area within a couple years.
