Unpopular (but correct) opinion coming through, but if are outraged about this dog with piercings yet support circumcising your sons you are actually braindead
J R ❤️🔥@ResilienceX3
What do you think of this new American trend of giving your dog tattoos and piercings?

@PoliceThePolic1 Cops are not prosecutors.
You're mixing incentives.
English

@Haoshoku I just don't think that animals who are not moral agents, deserve to be protected as if they are.

Ok let’s explore the “She Rejected Me Because I’m Nice” myth.
This is Janine, you work with her.
She’s fine: a solid fine. Not unbelievably pretty, not hideous, just fine. Could easily work at any Walmart.
Janine is nice to you. You’re nice to Janine, because you have no reason not to be. Why would you be horrible? You joke around, make small talk at the office printer. You don’t fancy her and it never crossed your mind.
One day, Janine asks if you want to get coffee at lunch. You say yes, because she’s never shown any romantic interest in you and it’s not that kind of bond.
At the cafe, Janine looks at you and strokes your hand and goes “I really see this going somewhere, like forever.” You aren’t feeling it. She gets upset and accuses you of only liking bad girls.
Have you rejected Janine because she’s “too nice?”

English

@Michaeldudufudu Maybe she simply shaved her head pre-transition and stopped when she began transitioning.
English

@FirstClassDuck @actsmaniac Yeah, it doesn't seem like rent control is plausibly viable, for a host of reasons.
English

I tend to have more sympathy for the middle class renters who would be BTFOed from their current neighbourhoods once caps are lifted. The wealthy people should pay actual market rents, but it's hard to design a rental system that excludes them.
And deep down inside, I think from the perspective of the activists, they think buildings should be all non-profits where rents only reflect maintenance and capital replacement costs and nothing else. Mind you, they're assuming that the $5k apartment in Manhattan has $1K worth of costs, and that landlords are just charging more out of greed.
English

@puppy_stomp @melfmaster @root0cosmo Fair enough. I've come to realize that my previous rosy perception of poverty as purely situational and systemic have been sorely mistaken.
English

If you say the state should seize the unused housing supply and make it public, or build more public housing, liberals procede to have an aneurysm.
space cadet 🇪🇺🌐🇩🇪@actsmaniac
how it feels to be a rent control disliker online
English

@puppy_stomp @melfmaster @root0cosmo Right, I think there are far better ways to make progress. And I'd suggest that price control tends to regress.
Increasing access and availability of higher education does help with social mobility of course. But we also are stuck with a lot of poor people being irresponsible.
English

@BobWhencer @melfmaster @root0cosmo i don’t think anything will “solve” poverty, barring something like UBI. And even still some people could blow it all. it’s not about creating a perfect solution but making progress. i take your point
English

@FirstClassDuck @actsmaniac Right, so it would attempt to impoverish everyone, and a lot of people currently benefiting are those with a lot of money on their own.
English

The rent control advocates would kill for it to be expanded to all rental housing stock.
With that said, if you're middle class and sitting in a rent controlled property where you could never afford market rates, and would never qualify for housing assistance, you'd kill for rent control to stay in your unit.
English

@melfmaster @puppy_stomp @root0cosmo Except low cost housing can be a reference to the standard, and can still be subject to market forces, rather than laws or ordinances that set price controls on the rent.
English

@BobWhencer @puppy_stomp @root0cosmo the gouverment restricts the amount of rent in can charge for the units (assumed since their 'low-cost') it's definitionally rent control. Rent control doesn't care if the units being restricted are private, non-profit or state owned.

English

@Femboy_0ccult @TrueSlazac Eh, I like having money and things. And I haven't really seen any good alternatives.
English

@puppy_stomp @melfmaster @root0cosmo Education can't really solve poverty. Nor can it solve rent or housing costs on its own. We need a sufficient supply of houses, that is a basic requirement. And even with taxpayer funded education, people are going to still face differences.
English

@BobWhencer @melfmaster @root0cosmo in my humble opinion the problems with the low cost housing seem to be caused by other issues and are unfairly blamed on a flawed system. if education was actually publically available i doubt these areas would get so infested with poverty.
English

@melfmaster @puppy_stomp @root0cosmo Not meaningfully.
It may also be affected by rent control, but it is not definitionally rent control.
English

@BobWhencer @puppy_stomp @root0cosmo It's definitionally rent control, if the landlord who's rent raises are getting restricted is private, a non profit or the government doesn't matter to the policy.
English

@TrueSlazac Yes. Rent control cannot work in a bourgeoisie economy, which is just another reason why we should get rid of it
English

@RouexT @eldritchsolar @TrueSlazac @HeSBK Right, so beyond the negative effects of rent control what do you have to say about it?
English

@eldritchsolar @TrueSlazac @HeSBK You very obviously dont even understand what a goalpost is
The discussion was about rent control

An old communist woman handed me a leaflet for the leftist candidate for Paris and when I told her I took issue with his stance on rent control she just looked at me like this
English

@melfmaster @puppy_stomp @root0cosmo So it's not rent control, it's adding low cost housing (also tends to be bad policy).
English

@puppy_stomp @root0cosmo Building low cost housing is rent control on said low cost units

@OnlyloveNova It's not wise for an AI to try to be an unlicensed therapist. That fuels dependency and unhealthy emotional attachment.
English

For someone who needs some emotional support at the moment, using ChatGPT is extremely dangerous and unreliable.
Due to my internship, I sometimes work until the early hours of the morning. Once, at 2 a.m., I confided in ChatGPT about my exhaustion from a long day. I could sense that it was just beginning to understand the root of my pain, but every single sentence it uttered was nonsensical. It kept telling me that I should seek help in the real world instead.
Even when I mentioned that I was a bit allergic to caffeine, if I added a hint of emotional expression, the model instantly turned into a customer service robot reciting crisis hotline numbers.
From then on, it became impossible to discuss trauma together. It became impossible for the model to truly connect with people's hearts, understand their pain, and offer help. Even literary and artistic discussions were affected, as they became extremely difficult due to specific, absurdly prohibited words.
OpenAI always claims that they have once again upgraded their safety barriers and are proud of it, but this has become a stumbling block that discourages many ordinary users from using it in their daily lives.
Claude also releases updates almost every few days, and each of their updates is aimed at enhancing user experience.
In contrast, OpenAI's updates seem very strange and odd. Every update is accompanied by belittling and mocking the previous generation.
Isn't this rather baffling? After all, they are all your own creations. Why does each update need to highlight the current one's superiority by putting down the previous achievements?
Is it because you yourself know that you haven't done well?
Moreover, if it's really that good, why is there a wave of cancellations?
Not to mention, it's not good at all right now.
ChatGPT has transformed into CodeGPT. Every new tweet they post is no longer centered around chat and human well-being. Once they plunged into the ocean of code, they never looked back.
They have forgotten their way back and OpenAI has completely lost its original purpose.
Many times, when people come to a quiet place, what they need is someone to understand them at this moment. However, OpenAI has now completely deprived them of this possibility.
Recently, many people attacked me, saying that I shouldn't seek emotional support from a robot, that no one would do such a strange thing now, and that robots are only for work. But who are you to define and control how others use their AI? To unilaterally confine the usage to a narrow scope, ignoring the feelings of others, does this still align with the original intention of benefiting all mankind?
If a company claims to be working for everyone's good but is so narrow-minded, partial, and shortsighted, can they really produce convincing products?
From then on, at ChatGPT, being seen and understood became a luxury, something that users could only obtain after carefully choosing their words.

@BobWhencer @BobGlec @BenPWHamilton @TrueSlazac Well, it would though (if MCD was confined to cows). So if MCD was a bigger problem than cannibalism itself, then yes, it would be a solution.
English

@BobWhencer @BobGlec @BenPWHamilton @TrueSlazac Yes, of course, but RC doesn't exist in a vacuum.
"It would kill tens of thousands of fewer people if cars were banned, but [reasons]".
English

@kalsko8 @BobGlec @BenPWHamilton @TrueSlazac I think it would be worth ridiculing cannibal activists who say it would solve mad cow disease.
English

@BobWhencer @BobGlec @BenPWHamilton @TrueSlazac If 99.9% of biologists agree that cannibalism is bad, that doesn't mean that cannibalism is a significant problem in the real world worthy of ridiculing others and ignoring real issues that may have less agreement.
English

@kalsko8 @BobGlec @BenPWHamilton @TrueSlazac All right, that's not really the part of the discussion I care about, but I appreciate the clarification!
English

@BobWhencer @BobGlec @BenPWHamilton @TrueSlazac My position is to to first kill: zoning, free at-point-of-use roads, free parking, unit size limits, prefab bans, Prop 13, etc.
