3 Philadelphia Police Officers Shot in Wynnefield Suspect Dead June 13, 2026 Three Philadelphia police officers are in stable condition and a 57-year-old suspect is dead after a shootout in the city's Wynnefield neighborhood late Saturday night, June 13, 2026. Law enforcement and family sources have identified the deceased suspect as Eric Franks, a Marine veteran and retired Philadelphia firefighter. Officers responded around 10:33 p.m. to the intersection of 54th and Arlington streets following reports of a vehicle struck by gunfire. Upon arrival, officers encountered Franks, who preliminary information suggests was entirely unrelated to the original vehicle shooting. Surveillance video captured Franks getting into the faces of the officers and shoving one of them. When officers attempted to arrest him at 10:46 p.m. for refusing to comply with orders, Franks drew a handgun from his waistband. Franks opened fire on the group. Four responding officers returned fire, killing Franks at the scene and leaving nearly 50 pieces of ballistic evidence scattered across the highway. All three injured officers were rushed to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel reported they are in stable condition and expected to survive. Their specific injuries include: One officer shot in the face. One officer shot in the hip. One officer shot in the leg. The wounded personnel include an 8-year veteran sergeant, an 8-year veteran officer, and a 2-year veteran officer. A fourth officer involved in the shootout was uninjured. Franks was transported to Jefferson Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 11:00 p.m.. Shocked family friends noted the violent exchange was completely uncharacteristic of the 19-year firefighting veteran. Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro publicly expressed relief that the officers survived. The Philadelphia Police Department's Internal Affairs and Shooting Investigation Units are actively reviewing city street surveillance and body-worn camera footage to determine what triggered the fatal altercation.
