🦵🏻🧵Having worked in orthopedics before… Here’s what many people get wrong about knees and what the anatomy actually says 1/ “Bone-on-bone means exercise will destroy my knees.” False. Exercise is one of the BEST first-line treatments for knee osteoarthritis. ✅ Reduces pain ✅ Improves function ✅ Does NOT accelerate damage Your knee gets stronger with smart loading, not weaker.

@ChrisCotillo Roman said the pain was on “top” of his hand Pain on the “top” of the hand could lead to more of a scapholunate ligament sprain, especially given the negative X-rays although that doesn’t necessarily rule out a fracture Return times can vary for that based on severity

Chad Tracy says Roman Anthony’s X-rays were negative but he’s flying to Boston in the morning to see a hand specialist to be sure.

Feels like that MRI is going to tell us a lot about where Roman Anthony is at. Just brutal to see him deal with an injury every single time his bat starts to heat up.

@AbbasiMuqtadir Thalassemia trait (alpha or beta). This classic pattern—mild anemia, marked microcytosis, high-normal RBC count, and normal ferritin—points to thalassemia carrier state rather than iron deficiency or anemia of chronic disease.

AC joint injuries are most common in men aged 20–49 and are frequently seen in contact sports such as football and hockey. Mechanisms include direct contact to the lateral shoulder, a fall onto an outstretched arm, or a fall onto the acromion with the arm adducted.

@DrJesseMorse Read somewhere the mean return time for MLB pitchers is about 6 months. What could determine the return time? Extent of injury mostly? Interesting with skubal himself in his contract year as well

Tarik Skubal Undergoing a procedure to remove loose bodies, usually osteophyte/bone spurs, inside his throwing elbow. These are usually created by the body to help with stability as the repetitive throwing motion is damaging to the surrounding ligaments and tendons. Since the body can’t create new ligaments and tendons (hence damage to the UCL), the best I can do is create new pieces of calcium, which are essentially bone spurs. Sometimes they get dislodged and fall into the joint. Think of it as a rock in your shoe, annoying, painful and not supposed to be there. Hopefully there is no cartilage damage to the joint as a result of these (think arthritis), and it sounds like his ligament is in OK shape. Return returning in 2 to 3 months is realistic.
Jon Heyman@JonHeyman

Skubal will undergo surgery for loose bodies in his elbow. There’s no set timetable but it’s seen as a relatively routine surgery. Best guess: two months @EvanPetzold 1st on surgery

⚾️Loose bodies in the elbow are small fragments of cartilage, bone, or a combination of both that become detached and float freely within the elbow joint space. “Loose body removal" refers to the surgical extraction of these fragments, most commonly performed arthroscopically (using a small camera and instruments through tiny incisions). Arthroscopic removal has demonstrated excellent results

Detroit ace Tarik Skubal will undergo surgery to remove loose bodies in his left elbow. Such procedures typically sideline players for 2-3 months. Skubal should return before season's end, but a tough blow for the impending free agent and two-time reigning AL Cy Young winner.
