@Una @Shopify Couldn’t you price things by the inch, and round the yard based order up to the nearest 1/36th of a yard (ie. nearest full inch)?

Does anyone @Shopify know why you can't sell things in fractions (i.e. 0.5, 0.25)? Seems like a basic platform feature but apparently the only way to do this is via paid apps that are expensive and don't work well. The fabric/sewing community is very upset about this. WHY is this an issue?

@hey_amandam The expert software engineers I worked with would often make horrible managers, as they couldn’t handle non-technical issues forcing sub-optimal solutions. The best mgr I had was a very good engineer with the communication skills to manage the team and defend them to upper mgmt.

When I was working as a dev, I got to a point where I was presented with this decision. Advance through the IC ladder or the people one. I rejected this idea and looked for another path where I could build and work with people. This is actually how I ended up in devrel. Narrow minded corporate structure pushed me out of dev teams.

Gpt plus plan is $20/month which gives you decent access to codex 5.3 and you can downgrade models for tasks you don't need the best model for. I'm not as well versed with the local models but Ive heard folks have success with the Qwen Coder models although they are slower and hardware requirements could be an issue. API based, Gemini 2.5 flash is affordable and you could check pricing on Sonnet 4.6. It will all depend on what you are trying to do/learn. If you aren't sure what you need/who you wanna pay for, check out open router and that way you can try out all the free models in one place too

@hey_amandam People forget that AI tools are also an expense. If the productivity gains don’t lead to increased revenue & profit, then companies will look to drastic measures to improve financial performance. I’m sad that their layoffs affected you.

All the commentary from folks about Block laying people off because they weren't AI native, I can assure you every single person I met at Block was using and making an impact with AI at levels on the forefront. Not just devs. And in my team, AI was an ingrained part of our work...all of us. Not trying to scare anyone, but that's not it. Teams are getting leaner, period.

If you enjoy Oriental Pearl, allow me to recommend a few of her videos. If not: “What is Happening to Japan” then certainly: “White Girl Speaks Japanese. Japanese people shock, surprise, amazement!” There’s also, “White girl speaks Japanese, you won’t believe what the locals did next!!” And my personal favourite: “Japanese React to White Girl Speaking Japanese! Sugoi! Incredible.” I should add for clarity, impressively these are genuine, actual videos on her channel. Not me being sarcastic for once. Quality content for the ages indeed👌

There's graffiti in Shibuya today. Look for the bad things and you'll find them. Look for the good things and you'll find them too. But unfortunately, positivity doesn't drive clicks.
