Acht kinderen. Geen hulp. Dus helpen wij Wij dachten op bezoek te gaan bij een groot, arm gezin met vier kinderen. Maar toen we binnenkwamen, bleek het verhaal heel anders. Er waren geen vier kinderen. Het waren er acht. We kregen een rondleiding door hun kleine huisje, in slechte staat. Geen echte keuken, maar een soort stoof in een keukentje. Het dak lekte, de vloer was scheef. De kinderen slapen verdeeld over twee kleine kamers. Geen gas. Meestal ook geen stroom. En toch proberen deze moeder en vader, met het kleine beetje dat ze hebben, een echt thuis te maken. Dit gezin komt uit het zwaarste frontgebied. Ze zijn gevlucht zonder geld en vrijwel zonder bezittingen. Om opnieuw te beginnen met niets. Op de meisjeskamer zagen we een foto van een oudere vrouw. “Dat is Oma,” zei de moeder. “Ze is pas overleden.” Daarna wees ze naar een andere foto. “En dat is mijn zus… ook zij is kort geleden gestorven.” En toen viel alles op z’n plek. “Daarom hebben we nu acht kinderen,” zei ze. “Wij konden ze niet naar een weeshuis laten gaan.” Geen financiële steun. Een vader die nauwelijks iets verdient, omdat er simpelweg geen werk is dat genoeg oplevert. En toch namen ze deze beslissing. Acht kinderen. In een huis dat eigenlijk al te klein is voor vier. Ondanks alles kozen ze ervoor om deze kinderen op te vangen. Omdat familie gewoon familie is. We konden natuurlijk niet anders dan meteen helpen. Voedsel, geld en een generator. I travelled through Great Nicobar today. These are the most extraordinary forests I have ever seen in my life. Trees older than memory. Forests that took generations to grow. The people on this island are equally beautiful - both the adivasi communities and the settlers - but they are being robbed of what is rightfully theirs. The government calls what it is doing here a “Project.” What I have seen is not a project. It is millions of trees marked for the axe. It is 160 square kilometres of rainforest condemned to die. It is communities that have been ignored while their homes have been snatched away. This is not development. This is destruction dressed in development’s language. So I will say it plainly, and I will keep saying it: what is being done in Great Nicobar is one of the biggest scams and gravest crimes against this country’s natural and tribal heritage in our lifetime. It must be stopped. And it can be stopped - if Indians choose to see what I have seen.
