To put this in even a crazier light, Acuña Jr had 552 less plate appearances than Soriano, 1263 less than Barry Bonds, and 1570 less than Bobby Bonds. If we normalize all four’s stats to 4512 plate appearances (the average of the four):

I don’t necessarily disagree. I also think that golf lovers need to have a bigger picture mindset when it comes to the health of the game long-term. That bigger picture mindset should include trying to have actual discussions about these issues rather than trying to gate-keep.

@BoldCityCap I thought the USA chants were Bush League for my taste. If Young and Fitzy were both Americans it would be fine. Golf is unlike any sport because you don’t cheer against an opponent of your favorite player as you do the opponent of your favorite team. Chanting Cam fine, USA not.

@BCB_Ocho I think there are dumb fans at nearly every tournament. I think that likelihood only increases as the crowds get larger and you attract new people.
I also think there are ways to educate and even police that w/o stymying fun and growth overall.

@BoldCityCap I think there should be a basic level of decorum for golfing and golf tourney attendance. Not trying to be stodgy, but I can't stand when fans try to be the show. Also, fan complaints at Sawgrass aren't new, Montie used to catch hell often.
It's not the Waste Management Open.

Agreed to a point. I think a basic tenant of golf is that respect element you mention. I’m also ok w/the Players being a bit more of a party than The Masters. It doesn’t need to be the Waste Mgt, but the fact that it’s evolved into more of a comprehensive event is a good thing.

@BoldCityCap My only point is I’d rather The Players be more like the Masters than the Waste Management Open in Phoenix from a fans perspective. Respect all the players doesn’t seem like too staunchly old-guard. I mean it is called The Players Championship.

If you’ve never traveled abroad and experienced sporting cultures elsewhere, this seems normal to you. Except, for much of the rest of the world, it’s not.
When you understand this, you see why the American default is to either just boo or chant USA USA USA at every turn.

We pioneered the over-commoditization of sport. The way in which it is treated within our culture has brought us to where we are. In many ways it’s a sanitizer for sterile form of fan culture that’s resulted.

I think the Ryder Cup sucked this year from a fan perspective, but not just because of the rude fans. I think it sucked largely b/c American sporting fans are unoriginal. While the Euros are singing clever songs that bring joy and laughter, our default was to heckle/talk shit.

There’s a happy place for all of this where the game can evolve, but still carry a true level of respect for the players and opponents. That happy medium needs to be taught and encouraged, not scolded and argued over/about.

Gate-keeping is what had the game at pretty bad place for a while there. You had younger generations by and large not embracing it. You had courses closing or on the brink of closing. This new renaissance is led by a relaxing of the staunch decorum that traditionally existed.
