@history_under Did he survive Camp Douglas? If so, how long did he live?

My 3x great grandpa, George Mills, who fought with the 15th Texas Cavalry in the Civil War. Taken prisoner in Arkansas and was held at the notorious Camp Douglas. Pretty rough looking ol’ boy.

NEW: To celebrate America’s 250th birthday, The National Archives will open a special exhibition, “Free and Independent: A Celebration of the Declaration,” on April 24, 2026. The exhibit will run through July 5th, 2027 and is free and open to the public.

@BooksnBattle @SavasBeatie Even if it’s a battle/campaign I’m intimately familiar with, I will still pick up an ECW publication about it because I feel it helps keep me grounded and that I will still learn something.

@HandlebarHist @SavasBeatie I see. The Yorktown NPS worker in the bookstore today really helped with this find. It’s on the shelf and since I’m familiar with ECW books, I know it’s gonna be good.

@BooksnBattle @SavasBeatie is a life savor with these books. I can both get a good concise account and have aids to create a better version of a personal undertaking to tour such places. Hidden gems are often highlighted as well.

The wind today at Yorktown was blowing pretty strong today. So much so it toppled over my tripod for my phone half a dozen times. One of them lead up to the screen protector getting smashed. Luckily it still works, my phone. But it’s ugly.
