According to George R. R. Martin’s lore, dragonfire doesn’t originate in the mouth at all.
Dragons possess two special organs that produce a highly flammable substance. That substance is ignited internally and expelled through the throat before exiting the mouth as fire. The slits and gaps in the mouth are simply outlets for the flame, not its source. The mouth is just the exit; the throat and those internal fire organs are where the magic actually happens.

They all kinda shift, but sometimes they align with time in the source, and the closer shards align with the source more often. Its kinda crazy how deep it goes XD
