I’m not sure if there is any meaningful difference between plausibility and conceivability in this context. Is there some relation between plausibility/possibility though? Seems plausible..

@MsuarezaSuarez @d08890 @BaptisteLeBihan I'm not assuming a link between conceivability and possibility. But the kind of modality involved in Bayesian reasoning is conceivability constrained by background knowledge. Here's an example....

That something is conceivable doesn’t imply it’s also possible. This belief in the conceivability-possibility link is popular among rationalists like Philip, less so among empiricists.

@BoothMattBooth not necessarily. you can hate some hypothesis while feeling intuitively it's likely to be true

In responses to this, a lot of people conflate 'intuitions' and 'temperament'. I don't think science or philosophy is possible without appeal to intuitions, but that's different from believing what suits your temperament.

@Philip_Goff I’d suggest that it is entirely possible for a god to perform evil acts, but the probability would be zero if the god is ‘perfectly good’; it is a possibility but not an eventuality.

Suppose God existed, would She be able to torture kids for fun? I want to say: (A) Yes, because God is all-powerful, but (B) there's no possible world in which God does this, because God's perfectly good. Does that make sense? That God is able to do sthg but it's not possible?

@davidjthunder The issue is that the models tend to have so many free parameters that many different parameter sets can reproduce the data. However, somewhat counterintuitively, it seems that this doesn't necessarily prevent such 'sloppy' models from being used to make some useful predictions.

If matematical models consistently over-estimate deaths and hospitalisations and only get things right once in a blue moon, then it is time to ditch the models & re-think their fundamental assumptions about immunity, modes of transmission, effects of lockdowns, etc.
