How I am a “new artist” at 38 🤣😍 •got signed at my 3rd ever open mic gig at 23 (had been working in a bank before that!) •recorded an album •the label went bust •self released the album using money from my Mum’s will (£20,000) •album flopped •felt huge amounts of shame for spending her money on something so frivolous (she was a hardworking teacher from a working class family) •swore off making music •began working for a dance label •wrote the occasional dance tune to make rent (and for beer / cocaine money) •beer / cocaine eventually got the best of me (it took a few years…) •stopped drinking in 2018 •dedicated myself to songwriting •wrote 3 top 10 UK hits SOME FUCKING HOW in the years that followed •got out of £40,000 debt •decided to make music again and somehow found the confidence to do it mid-30’s (helped by therapy and an amazing partner!) •funded by money I have early through songwriting •did my first sold out tour this year It has been a wild ride and I am extremely grateful for a second chance of making art ❤️

@its_R_O_R_Y @gensdegenerates This is so refreshing! I started writing music at 29… released my first single at 31. It took me till then to find myself & it can be sh!t feeling like it’s too late but the feeling of giving it all up scares me more 😅

@gensdegenerates There really is. But it’s crazy how an industry historically dominated by youth can really make you believe you’re too old / missed your chance! I’d love to hear more older artists ❤️
