Right! Let’s see! America. The country that turns up late to every war, loses them, and then builds a monument to itself for showing up at all. Korea? Lost. Vietnam? They literally ran away. Iraq? Lost, couldn’t fix it, and left the bill on the table. Afghanistan? Twenty years, two trillion dollars, and the Taliban had the keys back before the last helicopter cleared the roof. And now Trump is standing at a podium, chest out, telling the world this is the greatest military victory since 1945. The Americans once landed on the moon. Genuinely extraordinary. But that was sixty years ago, and they’ve been dining out on it ever since like a man who scored a goal in a school football match and still brings it up at dinner parties. Alone, America doesn’t win wars. It wins press conferences.

Nobody in the Trump administration planned for Iran to shut the Strait of Hormuz. Nobody planned for sustained missile strikes on American bases across the Gulf. Nobody planned for an energy crisis. Nobody planned for Europe to look at Washington, shrug, and walk the other way. Nobody, it turns out, planned for very much at all. Read the accounts of how this war was decided and you are left with one deeply uncomfortable realisation: the people who launched it appear to have been genuinely surprised by almost everything that followed. The Iranians shot back. The allies didn’t show up. The oil price went vertical. All of it, apparently, news to them. Which leaves two questions so obvious they’re almost embarrassing to ask.
