In his non-hit book “Noise,” Jacques Attali makes a contention that political and economic developments in the West have been foreshadowed in the realm of music. Not just composition, but also production, performance, etc. In my lifetime, music production has gone from the work of 15 people minimum to one guy on a laptop. This has upsides and downsides. The upside is that now an album can truly be the work of an auteur, responsible for everything from the cover art to the final mix. The downside is that there is a deluge of such music since all of those 15 people previously employed making one album now make 15 albums. This logic has taken a bit longer to play out in the realm of movies, another notoriously corporate genre of art. Auteur-type video content has mostly been confined to shorts and edits. I believe that the current generation of AI tools will put this over the top, though, and you will see whole movies written, shot, edited, etc. by if not 1, then 3 people and sold direct to consumer. But the final form, the thing that will define the post-AI era, will be the auteur application. When you marry the ability of even mediocre LLMs to do yeoman development work with alternative financing and distribution methods like crypto currency and direct access to mass media via X, you’ll live in a different world. A cambrian explosion of apps which will favor the creative generalist and put him in a class of his own. Plan accordingly.
