He had rubbed some traditionalists the wrong way early on — fair or not — because he came from the analytics side of things. But he had worked hard on becoming a more knowledgeable scout through film study. The guess here is that Halaby realized he had topped out at the NFL after falling short of getting GM jobs. For all the advances made by those who didn’t take a traditional path in personnel, the league is still very much dogmatic about having “football guys” in football roles.

This Maxx Crosby situation is crazy. There are massive ripple effects from it. The Raiders’ free agency approach changed when they traded him. Other teams who wanted Crosby pivoted as well. The draft picks involved. And now, the future of Crosby is the biggest question in the NFL.
