When it comes to confidence, we get it exactly backward. That the only way to feel more confident is to take action first... And let confidence follow. Action is the fuel of confidence. And the habit that changes everything is to do it when you're not feeling confident. This messes with our minds because we assume that confident people must always feel confident. Otherwise, how could they do all those amazing things? In reality, they're often just as scared of you... But they've somehow managed to create a habit of taking action regardless of how they feel. Brains are exquisitely good... at getting us out of uncomfortable situations. The problem is that without discomfort, there is no growth... Without growth, there is no confidence... And -- as the famed scientist Dr. Richard Petty says -- "Confidence is the stuff that turns thoughts into action." The problem is that discomfort needs a nudge. Without making discomfort FUN, the brain naturally wants to give up. In fact, one of the main jobs of your "orbitofrontal cortex" is to keep track of how fun things are... One of the biggest headaches I hear constantly from leaders is about turnover...churn...attrition... People who they've invested months and even years into... Just up and leaving the company. Brains are surprisingly good simulators. But that doesn't mean they're good truth tellers. In fact, the main thing your brain is up to is not reacting to what happens... It's reacting to what it thinks is about to happen. In other words, your brain is a giant "prediction machine." It's always one step ahead. That may sound like a good thing. But it tends to get us in trouble. It means we have blind spots. Plenty of them. The problem is that when we think we're seeing things objectively... We risk settling into a smug self-righteousness that can be off-putting to others. Not only may we be missing something important, but we forget that our perception isn't reality... It's merely a simulation of reality...one that the brain made up. Checking our blind spots starts with understanding how our brain creates our perception. But fair warning! Limiting beliefs are surprisingly sticky. And this is where it gets confusing. Why would something that isn't true come back to haunt us again and again? If you want to understand why limiting beliefs feel true (even though they're not), you've gotta understand neuroplasticity. The brain has different priorities than us... And one of its top priorities is energy efficiency. So it actually "prefers" to serve up a well-worn limiting belief simply because it takes less energy... Whereas building a new more empowering belief might take more energy. Once you understand this fundamental principle -- that your brain is an energy scrooge...
