Cognitive Integrity Layer: A Meta-Cognitive Architecture for Maintaining Epistemic Coherence in Autonomous AI Agents Whitepaper v1.0 Authors: Kazé A. ONGUENE Affiliations: Braincities Lab Date: December 29, 2025 "Abstract: Contemporary large language model (LLM) agents exhibit remarkable capabilities in executing complex, multi-step tasks through agentic chaining mechanisms wherein output representations are recursively transformed into subsequent prompt inputs. However, this autoregressive prompting paradigm introduces systemic vulnerabilities to semantic drift, state inconsistency, and constraint decay over extended interaction horizons. This paper presents the Cognitive Integrity Layer (CIL), a novel meta-cognitive architecture that addresses these fundamental limitations through three interoperating subsystems: the Intent Anchor System for goal-fidelity preservation, the State Integrity Verifier for accumulated knowledge consistency, and the Constraint Consistency Ledger for persistent rule enforcement. We formalize the theoretical foundations drawing from epistemology, distributed systems theory, and cognitive science, and present a reference implementation within the Alter OS cognitive operating system. Our empirical analysis demonstrates that the CIL architecture enables reliable agent behavior across interaction sequences exceeding 80 conversational turns while maintaining sub-15% semantic drift from original user intent." The CIL is now a fundamental part of Alter OS, ensuring cognitive integrity across all Al/ML operations. It will help maintain focus on original user intent, detect contradictions in accumulated state, and enforce constraints throughout extended conversations. Full paper accessible on demand.
