Dear Commissioner Manfred, As an Oakland A’s fan, I’m asking, why did MLB support abandoning a loyal, diverse fanbase when viable stadium plans and serious investors existed? Waiving the $500M relocation fee sent a message: ownership profits > community. Do the right thing.

There are some officials that do a great job, unfortunately there are officials who don’t. No contract should include rewards just for seniority, they should be tied to performance. There are still too many games decided by bad officiating, part of that too is there are too many bad rules and the league needs to quit treating these guys like they’re playing flag football.

The NFL’s collective bargaining agreement with the NFLRA expires May 31. The league sent a memo to each club last week prohibiting public comment on the situation. But as owners, league officials and team staffers in Phoenix at their annual meeting, sources painted a dire portrait of the likelihood of an agreement before replacement officials are hired.
Adam Schefter@AdamSchefter

NFL is set to hire replacement officials and begin onboarding them in the coming weeks, via @SeifertESPN and @kalynkahler. espn.com/nfl/story/_/id…

@49ersDrea Not certain I would say great yet, productive, sure. They’ve done well at addressing some areas of deep concern but we’re barely past the end of Q1 of this offseason. They need to do more and I want to see them have a good draft and fill additional holes.

49ers were aggressive in free agency, researched the substation (even if it’s silly), and are investing into the training/recovery facilities. Someone knock on wood… But this has been a great offseason.

Yeah same plan, I think there have been issues with updated versions and not transitioning. Mine lost a whole days worth of context in cowork. It’s functional and has had better success for me at execution than my openclaw agents but I have yet to get to be truely pro-active, think for itself. Openclaw still ahead on that for me.

I'm on Claude's $200 plan, and for some reason it's getting dumber. I'm talking simple contract review stuff where it COMPLETELY misses important details. Did it get nerfed? What's happening?

@TomPelissero I certainly don’t think they’ve earned any raise at all. These are “full time” officials, why is there any “dark period”. There are some good ones out there, I don’t deny that but I don’t think as a body they were good enough to earn what they’re asking for.

The NFL has offered its game officials a six-year labor deal with a 6.45% annual growth rate in compensation, while the NFLRA is insisting on 10% plus $2.5 million for marketing fees the league regards as worthless, sources say. The union also continues to resist changes the NFL is insisting upon, including shortening the “dark period” after the Super Bowl, deploying underperforming officials to spring leagues for extra reps and ending a seniority-based system for playoff assignments. “We want to pay for performance,” source said.
Tom Pelissero@TomPelissero

The NFL plans to begin hiring replacement officials before the May 31 expiration of its labor deal and deploy them in training camps to have them ready if no agreement is struck with the NFLRA. As one source said today: “Our direction (from owners) is not to be unprepared.”

I really do think there is a case to be made for contraction of teams that under perform on attendance. Clearly there are a combination of factors, ownership not putting a quality product on the field, local communities not supporting the team. @MLB should buy out those owners, and then look for options where teams might be successful. Portland might be one of those options. I favor contraction more than relocation because that just moves bad franchises to new areas. Moving a Marlins franchise, for instance, to Portland would leave the ownership intact to perpetuate the same problems in a different location.

@JeffPassan I think the system itself works perfectly, not a fan of the challenge part though. Personally I think the ssytem would be better and go faster if it was used exclusively to call all balls and strikes. That should be the next effort.

There are moments that offer a pretty good sense that something new is going to work. This feels like one for ABS. The Cincinnati crowd’s reaction was thunderous. And the situation itself — twice it salvaged a bases-loaded opportunity. This system plays.

@OaklandRooted So then conversely when you have teams that under perform in revenue and attendance (the As in Oakland) MLB should just contract them and fold them right?

Relocation should never be the default when expansion is on the table. If leagues want new markets, add teams.
Don’t rip them away from the communities that built them. This goes beyond Oakland. Across all leagues, expansion grows the game. Relocation leaves damage behind.

Vitello said Devers is still feeling the hamstring “a little bit.” He could play first base if needed, but there’s no reason to push it right now. They expect Arraez to see time there at some point, but it’s Schmitt for now (with Encarnacion an option as well).

The 5 worst NBA teams have a winning percentage of sub 30%. The NFL had 7 such teams last season. Did it dominate NFL coverage like tanking is for NBA? Nope! Because the NFL knows how to market the good stories and ignore the bad whereas the NBA often seems to do the opposite.

That’s actually the second dumbest thing MLB does… putting the first game of the year on Netflix and the other teams second game of the year on Apple TV is dumber. Those of us who pay for MLB TV shouldn’t have to pay for all these streaming services to see games and local market teams shouldn’t miss games early in the season because they’re on streaming services. There’s MY rant!

The dumbest thing Major League Baseball does is schedule an off day right after Opening Day. They build all that hype, then they immediately hit pause. Lol. There's my rant.

The NBA presented three comprehensive anti-tanking concepts to its Board of Governors on Wednesday, with modifications expected to each before a formal vote in May, per ESPN sources. 1. 18 teams in draft lottery (seeds 7-15 in each conference) – flattened odds, with bottom 10 teams having an 8% chance, the remaining 20% odds distributed in decreasing order for 11 through 18, and and a lottery drawing for all 18 picks. 2) 22 teams in lottery using 2-year record (seeds 7-15, plus the four playoff first round exits in both conferences). Lottery teams would reach a minimum win total floor in each season, such as 25 wins. If a team falls short of the floor, it gets slotted to meet the floor. Top 4 drawn as part of lottery, as is currently. 3) 18 teams in a "5 by 5" lottery – bottom 5 teams have equal odds for the top pick, with lottery formed for picks 1-5. Bottom 5 teams have a floor at 10; those that fall out of top 5 get sorted in a separate drawing.
