@BrandonTierney Your drinking the cool aid BT. Been around youth baseball for years. Let these kids be kids. I see too many talented kids be put in these unnecessary pressure situations as 9/10 years old. By the time they are in high school or college they are burnt out.

@BrandonTierney The problem is there is too much specialization. Kids should be encouraged to play multiple sports. No reason 10 year olds need to spend winter weekends in batting cages. Why parents sacrifice summers schlepping around the country hoping for a D1 scholarship I will never know

Massive cost difference between local travel and club ball/national events. Start there. There are absolutely solid, cheaper options. No one is forcing kids to play club. That’s where many of the elite players ultimately belong — and yes, that world gets expensive. But competitive local travel ball? In many cases, incredibly affordable compared to what people make it out to be. There ARE options. Same with lessons. Helpful? Sure. Mandatory? No. Also… how much is the newest iPhone in 2026? Jordan sneakers? Gaming systems? Concert tickets? EVERYTHING is expensive now — not just baseball and youth sports. The issue isn’t simply cost. The issue is priorities, expectations, and understanding what level actually fits your kid. I'm in the middle of it--hope this helps.

I find this whole conversation equal parts annoying and sad. The younger generation constantly gets labeled soft, distracted, disrespectful… whatever the complaint of the day is. “No one plays outside anymore!” “When I was a kid…” News flash — nobody really gives a shit what YOU did as a kid. And trust me, I’m including myself in that group too. Now the kids who ARE outside grinding, competing, practicing and fully invested in sports are getting crushed too? Along with the parents? Which one is it? You can’t scream that kids today lack passion and discipline… then mock the ones actually showing it. And if you’re not living it day to day, maybe instead of constantly passing judgment, just sit this one out. We all get older. Doesn’t mean you have to sound miserable in the process.

@BrandonTierney There is no problem at all but its a huge waste of money. 95% of these kids end up at schools they could have got into from simply playing local and high school ball. U think some kid from jersey is going to lsu because he got better from playing travel ball. One in a million

@BrandonTierney Too many pay for play options. Waters down the idea of elite travel ball. Just go on social media every weekend some friends kid is holding a championship trophy on a sunday at some obscure tournament. Go back to selecting the best local players for travel tourneys after szn

@BrandonTierney But why invest massive money into a player until his body is not developed? A lot changes for better or worse once puberty hits. The amount of parents touching the money before kids turn 13 is mind-boggling.

Sandlot it ain't. Youth sports now $40 B industry: "Teenagers on travel teams are rolling into weekend tournaments wearing a few thousand dollars of apparel, equipment & swag. Avg family spending on baseball increased nearly 70% between 2019 and 2024." wsj.com/business/retai…
