New carbon monoxide (CO) alarm requirements apply to condos and apartments! If CO can get into your unit, including from a garage, service room, fuel-burning appliance, or building ventilation system, you need a CO alarm. New rules take effect January 1, 2026. For full details on the updated 2026 CO alarm requirements, visit Ontario.ca/COSafety. #CarbonMonoxide #COSafety #COAlarms #WinterSafety #FireSafety #ProtectYourFamily

Winter’s here and the heat is on - but let’s keep it safe. Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fires in Ontario during the colder months. Whether you're using a space heater, fireplace or furnace, here’s how to stay warm without risking a fire: Keep anything that can burn (like blankets, curtains, and furniture) at least one metre away from heat sources Turn off space heaters when you leave the room or go to sleep. Never use your oven or stove to heat your home Have your furnace and chimney inspected annually by a professional Make sure smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are working and tested monthly Stay cozy, stay safe and make fire prevention part of your winter routine.

Be a Hydrant Hero this winter by keeping fire hydrants clear of snow. Clearing 1.5 meters around a hydrant gives firefighters quick access during an emergency. When a fire strikes, every second counts. #FireSafety #HydrantHero @oshawacity @iafflocal465

It’s been a week since the new changes to the Ontario Fire Code came into effect! The updates require carbon monoxide alarms in more residential settings, including some multi-unit buildings and places with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages. Here’s how to keep your home fire safe: • make sure CO alarms are installed where required • test your alarms to ensure they’re working properly • replace batteries if needed • talk to your household about what to do if the alarm sounds Carbon monoxide – you can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but it’s deadly. With the right alarms in place, the dangers are 100% detectable. Learn more about the new rules at Ontario.ca/CarbonMonoxide
