Author and Nobel Prize laureate Doris Lessing was a formidable writer who wrote more than 50 books that spanned an astonishing number of genres from realistic narratives to autobiographical works and fantasy novels.
She was awarded the literature prize in 2007 as "that epicist of the female experience, who with scepticism, fire and visionary power has subjected a divided civilisation to scrutiny."
