@BrendanDorman Ilia looked gassed by mid round 2 against Zalal. I suspect that's why he moved to striking after that because grappling for multiple rounds is tiring, especially for someone as explosive as him. There's a reason he doesn't seem too keen on fighting Arman.

Well said. I think I need to see Ilia’s ability to grapple with Movsar, or Islam (relentless), but ALSO have cardio for 5 rds. Islams finish of Dustin being a good example.
Also, his head kick KO of Volk was before anyone had solved that 🧩

@BrendanDorman 100%. I think Ilia is like the best fighter ever but Khabib is the only fighter ever from 145-155 I’d pick to beat Ilia just because of his insane chin & tenacity/physicality. He’s got the best possible style for Ilia

I disagree, but it’s irrelevant. He didn’t shoot once. Khabib usually shoots all day, unless he’s testing something and ahead by a lot.
Eg his improved feet and jab for Iaquinta on 2 minutes notice, or cage cutting vs Barboza. In this case, Conor finished that round apologizing.

Correct. Provably. Many a high level grappler can attest. It’s the speed and transitional speed of Khabib that’s different. He also learned to hide his shot with a jab and footwork / Level change toward the end too.
He didn’t just get the takedown he did a lot of damage there.

@BrendanDorman People really don’t know how much smarter of a wrestler and fighter khabib really is, in comparison to Khamzat who is physically a very impressive wrestler but not enough of fight IQ. Though I’m curious to see a matchup between islam and Topuria too

They’re not the same, at all.
Prime Khabib had a granite chin, defensive IQ, better striking & submissions, more efficacious TDs, S Tier cardio, and always got not only the TD, did damage afterward.
Totally different levels and mental strength.
PS Ilia is my favorite fighter.

We just watched an elite MMA grappler lose to a boxer with serviceable takedown defense. This fight result all but solidified it for me. Ilia Topuria would’ve knocked Khabib Nurmagomedov out within three rounds. #UFC328

@Chamblane That’s funny. Watch him vs Conor, round 2. Watch him vs Barboza in his prime, Khamzat W’s getting diced up standing in every fight that stayed there. DDP hurt him, Gilbert hurt him, Usman would’ve won if 5. He’s not Khabib, not even close. He’s not Islam, who slept Volk 1st etc.

I got a lot of shit for saying it last night but I haven’t rewatched. I remember Khamzat clearly in 1, Sean 2, Khamzat 3 (mute commentary) then Khamzat won 4 with TD’s AND damage. 5 is then moot? I think anyway, def need to rewatch though🍻✍🏼🔮👀

DIACLAIMER: I didn’t mean to confuse anyone, but I meant to say, comparing Khabib to Khamzat is silly, and last night didn’t change anything about Ilia vs Khabib, Ilia is 10x more skilled on his feet than Sean. He’s top of the food chain. The fight would be interesting, bc we’ve never seen a relentless grappler type, take Ilia deep, which is what Khabib did to everyone, in his prime. Ilia is amazing, Khabib is amazing. Last night showed no one a fuckin thing about that fight though -30-

Yes, absolutely. Why fall to your back? His coaches were killing him about it too, so I don’t think they understood either, if the translation is close… the sell outs are all using “Strickland solves the Dagestan Puzzle” and I’m thinking, 1. Chechnya 2. Islam would decimate him
