Read my lips. 👀 As babies learn to speak, they use more than just their ears to learn about the sounds we are making. They also use their eyes, studying how subtle movements and different mouth shapes produce a variety of sounds - and then working to emulate what they see. Here’s a cool example. Watch as this dad whistles for his daughter. After a few examples, she gives it a try - pursing her lips and vocalizing a high pitched squeak. What an amazing observer! It’s a great reminder of the importance of face-to-face interaction. Get up close and talk with your baby. Your face is teaching valuable lessons. This sweet little whistler was shared to IG by hinzmanfam_.

🧵21 things I wish someone would’ve told me as a new Assistant Professor: 1. It’ll take forever to get started and your lab setup. Take however long you’re hoping and double it. Maybe triple it. 2. Seek out new mentors and collaborators. They don’t need to be in your department.

Elon Musk’s Twitter deal is on again. As a frame of reference for both the scale of his wealth & our collective priorities, the $44 billion offering price is equal to the federal government’s full investment in #childcare for American children & families for nearly 5 full years.

Results suggest both developmental and stimulus-dependent changes in scanning efficiency! Further, we suggest these low level visual metrics (saccades and fixations) can a sensitive indicator of cognitive processing.

We were interested in how individual differences in saccade and fixation patterns (i.e., scanning efficiency) change with development, scene content and perceptual load.

After reading my bio, she exclaimed, “ah ha! I knew you weren’t a real teacher, it says here you’re just an assistant!” And I think that pretty much sums it up.

How was my first week on the tenure track, you ask? Well, last night, after a lengthy discussion with my niece trying to convince her that I am no longer a college student and am a college professor, I decided to pull out my phone and show her the @UTChattanooga faculty website.
