A fab day celebrating #WSWD2025 with SW from @BelfastTrust and learning together about improving wellbeing. Delighted to have the expertise of @BrettSmithProf to share his moving social workers project and help us think how we find space for physical activity in our work 🙌👇

Are our physical activity guidelines due for a rethink? Current guidelines are based on decades-old data from imprecise tools like questionnaires. Newer data shows even small doses of activity has significant health benefits: - Light-intensity activities, like slow walking or house chores, can lower the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes, similar to more intense exercise - Short bursts of lifestyle activity, like climbing stairs or hurrying to catch a bus, are linked to lower mortality and cancer rates - Step counts as little as 4,000–5,000 per day are associated with reduced risks of mortality, cardiovascular disease, and dementia The science is clear: some exercise is good, more is better. It’s time for guidelines to include the benefits of low-dose strategies for better health outcomes.

Small doses of physical activity (when quantified using #wearables) are potent for health & should be considered in next #PhysicalActivity guidelines & promoted by clinicians. Commentaty in current issue of @NatureMedicine by I-Min Lee et al. nature.com/articles/s4159… Three key contributions of wearables to future guidelines: 1. Light intensity #PhysicalActivity 2. Physical activity #micropatterns, e.g. #VILPA (vigorous intermitent lifestyle physical activity) 3. Stepping-based targets [noting that none of the 3 involve going to the gym :)] "Small doses of activity should be added to future guidelines, but while waiting for that to happen, clinicians can take advantage of the new knowledge now." @ma_hamer @Matthew_Ahmadi_ @NKoemel @JasonGill74 @fiona_bull @AdrianBauman @gibalam @MarieHMurphy @aiden1doherty @victormatsudo @AngeloSabag

Employment survey: I am doing research into the experiences of disabled people finding work. I'm focussing on people who, like me, have a physical impairment. I would be grateful if you could consider participating in the survey, or sharing it with those who may. The survey link is below and further information is attached. Thank you cambridge.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bD…
