However cruel and callous this attack, why would the government replace the ambulances? Private companies should have insurance, and the charity has also fundraised hundreds of thousands already to replace them. NHS ambulances are the domain of the government, not private companies or charities. Will it come from a separate pot of money or will it be taken away from London ambulance service? The arson was horrific but I’m genuinely confused by this.

When you freely allow antisemitism to run rampage, don’t be surprised when violence and racist criminality follows. The Hatzolah ambulances cover the whole of Barnet (and are for anyone) and other areas, and work closely with the overstretched London Ambulance Service. They were there to help as my dad died a few weeks ago, trying to get his heart started again. This hits hard as we don’t know where it ends.

I visited this wonderful charity just a few years ago in happier times, and I’m heartbroken this attack has happened. This is a racist crime and we will not tolerate it. Not as a government or a country. We all stand firmly with the Jewish community. I’m grateful to the emergency services and we're working closely with the Met to ensure everyone stays safe.

Fortunately no one was injured in this cowardly attack. However, a quick check shows that the cost of a new, fully-equipped ambulance is between £156,000 and £180,000 — meaning the total replacement cost could be in the region of £624,000 to £720,000. On a number of occasions I have personally seen these crews respond to members of the non-Jewish community. This does not only affect the Jewish community, but the wider community they serve every day.
