A three day festival in downtown Oakland with Jay-Z, Anderson, Paak, T-Pain and Soulja Boy on stage. 8,000 employees flew in from around the world. The bill was around $68 million. This showed up in Block’s own earnings filing. “General and administrative expenses increased by $68.1 million… primarily driven by an in-person company event held in Q3 2025.” Then, 200 days later, Dorsey posted a letter on X. “We’re reducing our organization by nearly half.” From 10,000 employees to under 6,000. Over 4,000 people were told to leave. His explanation was simple. AI tools “can do more and do it better.” He said he had two choices: cut slowly or rip the band-aid off. He ripped it. And Wall Street? They cheered. Block stock surged 24% after hours. Investors made billions in a single evening. Every dollar tied directly to 4,000 people losing their paychecks. This is how corporate America works now. Dorsey says Block isn’t in trouble. The business is “strong.” Gross profit hit $10 billion last year, revenue was $24 billion. The company is profitable but the people were just optional. And here’s the part that should concern everyone. Dorsey didn’t just announce layoffs.
