Paint does not adhere to rust. Seeing as you did not prep the surfaces, your one coat of cheap paint will begin flaking within months under the Desert sun, which will be more of an eye sore than a deterrent.
Plus, they’ll just wait until the steel cools down and they’re harder to detect in the dark.
