When Black people display intelligence, creativity, or excellence, they are not imitating Whiteness. Intelligence is a human trait, not a White trait. Black excellence is real, and it stands on its own not because of proximity to Whiteness, its because Black people have always possessed brilliance, talent, and innovation.

Today, I'm thinking about everyone still waiting to experience the freedom this day is meant to celebrate.

Today, I'm thinking about every family separated by detention, distance, deportation, deployment, incarceration, or impossible circumstances.

I'm thinking about the Indigenous peoples whose stories began on this land long before 1776. May we never forget that America's history didn't begin with America.

Today, I'm thinking about everyone who was asked to believe in freedom while being denied it.

So let me make sure I understand… It isn’t safe for us to be at a track meet and claim we were defending ourselves (Karmelo Anthony). It isn’t safe for us to go inside a gas station (Cyrus Carmack-Belton). It isn’t safe for us to walk home at night (Trayvon Martin). It isn’t safe for us to go jogging (Ahmaud Arbery). It isn’t safe for us to sit in a park (Tamir Rice). It isn’t safe for us to be in our own apartment (Breonna Taylor). It isn’t safe for us to be in our own home eating ice cream (Botham Jean). It isn’t safe for us to be in our own home babysitting (Atatiana Jefferson). It isn’t safe for us to play music in a car (Jordan Davis). And then when Black people are afraid, when Black people defend themselves, when Black people run, when Black people fight back, when Black people do anything besides quietly die, suddenly the system knows exactly how to find accountability. So what exactly is the safe place?

I hate how much of life revolves around money. Earning it, spending it, saving it, worrying about it……it’s exhausting.
