Zimbabwe’s biggest public hospital group, Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, has been operating in surgical emergency mode for a week after running out of a critical anaesthetic drug, Propofol.
Emergency surgical mode means that the hospital will not perform operations unless they are emergencies. All scheduled operations have been put on hold, and surgeons are only carrying out life-saving procedures.
The shortage has disrupted surgical services and highlights the deepening crisis in Zimbabwe’s public healthcare system, where even essential medicines and medical supplies are increasingly difficult to obtain. The crisis has severely disrupted operations.
In South Africa, a 20 ml vial of propofol costs only about US$0.80, while a 50 ml vial costs approximately US$2.22 at public-sector procurement prices.
This crisis shows how President Mnangagwa’s government has lost sight of important issues, focusing instead on things such as term extensions and maintaining its grip on power while patients die.
Zimbabwe is a country that has gone for more than four years without a single working radiotherapy machine for cancer treatment. Recently, a machine that was acquired has continued to break down, meaning cancer patients are still being denied access to this critical treatment.
Public hospitals also lack dialysis machines. Chitungwiza Hospital, one of the country’s five main central hospitals, does not have a single dialysis machine, yet it is services over 2 million people in Chitungwiza and Mashonaland East.
The level of disregard for human life, incompetence, and corruption has reached frightening levels.

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) confirms the arrest of Melline Chirinda, a teacher at St Joseph’s High School in Mutare, on two counts of fraud.
Allegations are that between January 2025 and January 2026, Chirinda misrepresented to Mercylyn Gonouya and Hellen Mutseyangwa that she had connections in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education (MOPSE) and can help them secure employment as teachers.
She demanded USD550 each from both complainants and later became evasive.
The matter was reported to ZACC, leading to the arrest of Chirinda on 28 May 2026.
Chirinda has since appeared at the Mutare Magistrates’ Court and was remanded to 15 June 2026 on US$100.
