In Brazil, a hunter cornered a giant anteater. He pulled out a knife instead of his rifle so he wouldn’t shoot his dogs. The animal grabbed him with both arms. His sons pulled him free, but he bled to death on the spot. This was 2012. Two years before, an anteater killed a 75-year-old hunter elsewhere in Brazil. Both deaths got written up in a 2014 paper. A giant anteater is roughly the size of a Labrador, with no teeth and a slow shuffle. Its mouth can barely open. The main feeding move is licking ants out of mounds with a two-foot tongue that flicks 150 times every minute. But on each front paw it carries claws as long as steak knives. Those claws are built to rip apart termite mounds harder than concrete. When something scares the anteater, it rears six feet tall on its back legs and grabs whatever’s in front of it with both arms. Brazilians call this the anteater hug. Both hunters in those medical reports died because the claws cut into the big artery in the thigh. A baby anteater rides on its mother’s back for almost a year, with stripes that line up exactly with hers. Predators can’t tell where she ends and the baby begins. She doesn’t carry her pup in her mouth the way a cat does, because she has no teeth to hold it with. Adults are nearly blind and deeply solitary. Their body runs at 91°F, colder than nearly every other mammal, and they mostly want to be left alone with their ants. In Brazil’s Pantanal, a wetland the size of England, researchers tracked what jaguars actually eat. Anteaters were less than 5% of the kills. Caimans, capybaras, and wild pigs are what the cats really go for. In 2017, a photographer in a canoe watched a male jaguar walk up behind an unaware giant anteater, crouch like he was ready to pounce, then lie down and watch. After a while, the cat just stood up and walked off. Roughly 5,000 giant anteaters survive in the wild today. They’re killed by cars, by sugarcane fires that farmers light before harvest, and by farm dogs.
