The end of the Roman Republic under Caesar and Augustus was preceded by earlier episodes that opened their way: first the Graachi Brothers and then Sulla and Marius. We should think of Trump as only one in what could be a continuing line of assault on our political institutions.

After controlling Covid and reviving the economy, shoring up democratic institutions should be the next priority for the Biden Administration. The stress test of the last four years has left our political institutions greatly weakened.
