Important implication in this thread is that Genetic Diversity within native breeds is key to being able to find the traits suited to this style of grazing & habitat mgmt. Only by preserving Genetic Diversity, can we adapt livestock to these changing practices. #GoNative

A few thoughts on “The Return of the Aurochs” premiere. Thread. 1. As the film does say, the cattle aren’t actually Aurochs. They are a cross breed better given a new name - “Tauros”. eventbrite.co.uk/e/return-of-th…

Exactly why the Cloud-Lines system gives its users the 'Stud Advisor' tool - using metrics to suggest the best breeding matches to preserve genetic diversity within a breed! 🙌🙌🙌

All New - Birth Notifications Bolt-On! We recognise the importance of being able to register lambs, calves, kids, piglets, etc at or soon after birth. also features the ability to take payments & charge per individual animal, or per litter, directly within the system!

Good news Rob & @SoilAssociation that's exactly our USP! Our online herd/flock book system uses best-practice metrics to suggest genetic-diversity focused breeding matches for closed breeds. This is achieved using the pedigree data alone! #GeneticDiveristy #Pedigree #Livestock

Instead of applying genome editing to farmed animals, we should be seeking to preserve the genetic diversity within the UK's rare and native breeds - 80% of such breeds are at risk of being lost, along with their many unique and valuable adaptive traits. gov.uk/government/new…

Really enjoyed this episode covering, amongst other things, the importance of Genetic Diversity. Thats the core of our system, so it's great to hear others championing the importance of genetic diversity in livestock breeds. #GeneticDiversity #RegenAg #UKAgri #livestock

Enjoyed talking to @overthefarmgate and @RareBreedChris - Good write up in the FG @FarmersGuardian on the importance of native breeds.

Finding and preserving the genetic diversity within livestock breeds is an alternative, and one that we champion with @RBSTrarebreeds. Preserving the vast wealth of genetic diversity in global breeds gives producers options in times of adversity or disease outbreak. #BCAS

Genetic engineering is not the same as traditional livestock breeding and we only need it because of the failings of industrialised, intensive animal agriculture. See our latest blog. rbst.org.uk/blog/the-genet…

When you have a closed studbook you have a set gene pool from which future generations will descend. A good way to think of this is the domestic dog, which encompasses hundreds of different varieties and breeds 🐕🐶🐩

Some different, but very cool hoofs - British Primitive Goats! These guys are feral, & descend from the goats originally introduced by humans 5000 yrs ago! It’s fun to see them pop up in contemporary diaries from history - I’ve read 18th century accounts! @BritishPrimitiv

As well has how closely related two individuals are, it's important to consider the wider population. Particularly when it comes to rare breeds, maintaining distinct lines helps to ensure genetic diversity amongst the population, which in turn can prevent genetic bottlenecking

@cultureddairy We're picking up where our previous group left-off a few years ago - the British Feral Goat Research Group. This group managed to successfully get the Cheviot wild goat population onto the FAnGR 'breeds at risk register'. We aim to document, assess & monitor all British wild pops

@londiner Hi there! There are indeed! The most well known and well documented is in the College Valley in the Cheviot Hills. There are many more populations all around the UK with varying degrees of modern genetic input (accidental/deliberate release of farm/pet goats).
