2/ Lawyers like @LawForNature @paulpowlesland have been calling for nature to be granted rights for years, to better defend habitats and species from destruction. A Rights of Nature Act would transform how we currently relate to nature as mere 'property' or a 'resource'.

Thanks for sharing. This is the most excited I've been about a project. New website with ways to get involved in this 'learning by doing' project around alternative perspectives on nature launching soon. Working on this today (whilst getting some wild inspiration of course!)

Congrats👏@Tom_H_Oliver and Brian Pickles each received $250,000 from the V. Kann Rasmussen Foundation for projects on sentience and cognition in nature! Tom focuses on biocentric awareness and governance, while Brian explores electrical communication between plants and fungi 🪴

@skdh This is quite shocking. You’re a physicist with 150k followers. Don’t you think you have a responsibility on social media to actually read something before you make a comment? No where does it say what you’re suggesting. It’s to reinstate an old definition that includes humans.

@BrontieMaria @yvonneredmond I really don't see those sorts of considerations as in any way relevant. What *is* relevant (IMO) is how we would actually communicate, simply, effectively and intelligibly, the most burning issue of our time, were the definition of nature amended. For eg: twitter.com/IrishRainfores…
Eoghan Daltun 🌍@IrishRainforest

@Rob_Percival_ How would we communicate the need to defend nature against human-caused destruction? "We need to stand up for more-than-human nature against human destruction"?

Think about it: our species is driving the sixth mass extinction event on Earth. If we insist on changing the dictionary definition of 'nature' to include ourselves, how do we then even discuss that, THE most burning issue of our time, in a meaningful way? Let alone oppose it?

@IrishRainforest @yvonneredmond You can talk about particular species doing serious destruction to nature, people do this regularly with deer and badger for example. At no point would we say those species are not a part of nature. We might talk about balance there for eg though.

@IrishRainforest @yvonneredmond I’m so intrigued by this point of view! You can break your own bones, you can pull your own hair out, you can bite all your nails off. Those are all still part of you…and you’re destroying them.

@IrishRainforest @IrishRainforest thanks for engaging with our work. We wrote up our research findings in this blog, I’d love you to take a look and then it would be great to have a conversation with you? Please do get in touch with me via DM here or our website. Thnx

Respectfully, of course people aren't separate from nature, but nor are we part of it. To insist that we are, would, in my view, render the word meaningless. What would something like 'I love spending time in nature' then even mean? Or the word 'artificial'?
Paul Powlesland@paulpowlesland

The illusion humans are separate from nature is at the heart of the environmental crises we face. I’m supporting the ‘We Are Nature’ campaign to change the definition of nature to include humans. Do show your support, because we are all part of nature! wearenature.org

@iancbeavis @IrishRainforest We’re in complete agreement @iancbeavis @LawForNature we spent 6 months researching the etymology of the word and collating evidence of current usage for the OED. When you get a mo look at our work and you’ll see that we’ve already had a breakthrough on this before launch.

I’m supporting the #WeAreNature campaign because we are a part of Nature, not apart from it. Language is important- it’s not only how we define things , it’s what defines us . . . @WeAreNature.campaign

UK dictionaries exclude humans from their definitions of nature. But language matters & if we want to repair our relationship with nature - we also need to redefine it & recognise that #WeAreNature. Join the campaign and sign the petition here: wearenature.org

So proud that our team (led by Jessie Mond-Wedd) are behind this important campaign. Until we understand the interdependency of all life (including ours) on nature we will continue on a heartbreaking path. Humans are a part of nature.

Such a lovely podcast with ⁦@paulpowlesland⁩ Incredibly principled, hard working and just…nice. He’s one of the best people I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know over the last 15 years. A shining example. Long may his great work continue! bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…

Just a quick note to say I’m going to move over to Bluesky as much as possible. I now find this space chaotic and uninteresting. Most of my favourite voices have gone silent. This is me over there, it seems a lot better so far. bsky.app/profile/bronti…
