Wie auch immer der Unabhängigkeitsprozess Bougainvilles ausgehen wird: Die Wurzeln des späteren Konflikts wurden vor genau 140 Jahren im Auswärtigen Amt in Berlin gelegt.

PNG achieved independence in 1975, the Solomon Islands in 1978. In both cases, the decolonization process followed the doctrine of uti possidetis, preserving the territorial integrity of colonial units at independence despite the arbitrary nature of their boundaries.
