I did a deep dive on this a couple months ago. I was a December birthday and it felt like such a disadvantage growing up playing hockey. You play in each age group for 2 years and what it felt like for me was, in each age group, I got like a redshirt year my first year and the second year I was at my level and then I started that cycle again while most of my friends got to play another year at the level I was just at. It was it was at its worst when I was a 5th grader playing in a league with mostly 7th graders in my first year with hitting allowed.
