Tom Dolan from co Meath is the first Irish winner of the Figaro single handed yacht race (the Tour de France of sailing) and only the third non-French sailor to win in its 55 year history. An incredible sporting achievement.

RIP to Peter Thursfield who took the picture that is on the front cover of our book The Kidnapping. He made a beeline to Ballyconnell on a hunch and took this photograph of Don Tidey surrounded by detectives shortly after Tidey was rescued from Derrada Wood 40 years ago this Saturday. Peter was a gentle Geordie and a lovely man. I hoped he would have been able to make our launch, but he was too unwell. RIP.

Over the last couple of months I have had the privilege of getting to know Don Tidey and his wife Barbara. Don is one of the most remarkable people I have ever met. When the Provisional IRA kidnapped him in 1983, they kidnapped a man who was far more a soldier than they ever were. irishtimes.com/culture/books/…
