@88mph121@Jmitch82784111@sola_chad Let’s read a book together and discuss.
That way we can “draw near with a true heart…and stir up love and good works”
I’m so excited Johnny. Let’s do this!!!
@Bryanlgravely@Jmitch82784111@sola_chad I appreciate that, very fraternal. And RARE on this app, thank you.
I would, actually. Not sure how to do it, but I welcome suggestions. For real.
@88mph121@Jmitch82784111@sola_chad Pick a book. We read it. Then we talk about it.
That way we can “draw near with a good heart…and stir up love and good works’
I’m so excited Johnny. Let’s do this!!!
What verse says that?
And that’s your definition, by the way. You have Protestant brethren who don’t define sola scriptura that way.
“Only scripture” or “scripture alone”
That means scripture alone is the final authority, as it’s inerrant and unchanging
The trouble is, without an infallible teacher, each individual becomes his own authority, putting his own opinions and understanding into the inerrant text. Since none of us are infallible (and all of us can claim the Holy Spirit guided us into the understanding, even when we read the same verse and come to different conclusions), we subordinate the Scripture to our own authority. In other words, the meme ⬇️
@88mph121@Jmitch82784111@sola_chad Hey Johnny.
That’s a bold question, What verse says it isn’t?
You would be wise to read Hebrews 10 and 13.
In fact if you have time would you like to fellowship together?
I would Love to read with you. I’m in John now but you pick!
Entirely depends on the religion. For example, the religion of atheism teaches that all human life is accidental, not intentional. That no human being has inherent value, no one was made in the image of any god. That there is no objective morality, no right and wrong, ought and ought not, but rather all things are determined by personal caprice and the capacity for violence to establish authority (whether personally or by a group/government).
Christianity, contrary to other religions which either have no morality or preach conversion by force and salvation by merit, is about humility. Each person taking the lowest seat at the table they can, each one loving the other as himself. Loving enemies, praying for those who persecute you, not taking credit for salvation but allowing God to be the one who gets the credit.
Other religions aren't like that at all.
This is what I mean by “hyper charismatics don’t believe in sola scriptura.” Listen to my old pastor. ⬇️
❌ “There’s certain things in [the bible] that you will never lay hold of unless it comes from the mouth of an apostle, prophet, evangelists, pastor, and teacher.”
They reject the idea that scripture is CLEAR and end up placing “the anointed” in authority over it. It’s the same way of thinking as RCC and EO, just in a different charismatic flavor.
@ItsYourFate112@sola_chad I wanted you to fellowship.
But since you’re playing dumb, which is tiring, I think your witness would work better with people who don’t have eyes or a Bible. I have both and am finishing up Hebrews now.
What is the point of following Christ, but not reading with others?
@Bryanlgravely@sola_chad Great and you’re welcome.
What translation says consummate?
Where did you even get the idea that they consummated?
The verse just says Joseph took Mary as his wife.
@berry_1337@sola_chad Rezak.
I asked another believer (think he was Catholic) last week to stop arguing and fellowship with me.
He insulted me.
Still hurts.
I’m inviting you to fellowship with me if you have the time. Rereading Hebrews now. Want to read it with me?
It all started with the claim that Catholics believe this. I’ve shown you that this is false. Have fun counting the people who don’t believe it. In any case, their ancestors all believed that Mary had no other children besides Jesus. And above all, the entire Church believed this. Universally and uncontroversially.
Regarding the Lutherans: The Smalcald Articles (written by Luther) are part of the Book of Concord, which is the official doctrinal standard for many Lutherans. It explicitly calls Mary “ever virgin.” So it is even doctrine.
@ItsYourFate112@sola_chad buddy that verse is talking about consummating their marriage after our Saviors birth. This isn’t even a context issue. The angel of the Lord told Joseph that Mary conceived through the Holy Spirit and not to divorce her.
Not watering the grass
Which I’m going to do now.
@Bryanlgravely@sola_chad Hi Bryan,
So every time St Matthew uses
παρέλαβεν in the Gospel, it means to consummate and have sex, huh?
biblehub.com/greek/strongs_…
Let’s apply your interpretation of your word in every instance παρέλαβεν is used shall we?
Interesting.
@ItsYourFate112@sola_chad Buddy.
If you want me to stay inside on the most beautiful day of the year, and I will, bouncing around is not the way to go
I thought we were talking about the extra biblical practice of the perpetual virginity of Mary. A belief I don’t believe
@berry_1337@sola_chad Buddy. You said most, not many.
That’s not being pedantic. That’s the entirety of this discussion.
No worries though. Have an awesome day.
What do you want from me, Brian? I gave you a list and proved that the Reformers (The founders of protestantism) ALL believed in it. Then I told you that many Protestants still believe in it today. And that’s the truth. Only those without a denominational affiliation and the Baptists reject it completely. But even some Baptist agree that the Bible does not prove it. Which is obviously the case.
Now you’re presenting a list that says: No. I mean, okay… believe what you want this is not my problem.
@ItsYourFate112@sola_chad Weren’t those Jewish traditions? These extra biblical beliefs couldn’t have been made yet right? So they were talking of the past…not traditions into the future.
That’s why I use the Bible as the ultimate authority. Thanks for the discussion. Have an awesome day ahead.
@Bryanlgravely@sola_chad More to read:
And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained [servants], born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued [them] unto Dan. (Genesis 14:14, KJV)
Is Lot now Abraham’s brother?
All of this to say, of course not.
@ItsYourFate112@sola_chad I don’t have to prove I’m right. To convince something that is extra biblical…the proof is on you right?
I mean we don’t prove innocence…that’s unprovable.
I read James as his brother. I read Joseph consummated the marriage after the LORD’s birth.
@Bryanlgravely@sola_chad Good Day Bryan.
This verse was in response to show that James is not Jesus brother, a common fallacy.
Where does the Bible state that Mary did not remain a virgin?
If you refute with Mtt 13:55-56, Mark 6:3, why do they explicitly state Mary’s only child is Christ?
@berry_1337@sola_chad Not trying to argue. But when you use huge adjectives like “most’ Protestants to make a point…
I have a right to ask what you’re going on about. And those individuals, while important, aren’t infallible and certainly don’t represent most of Protestants today.
Have a good one
•Martin Luther (Lutheran): Ever-virgin in Smalcald Articles and sermons!
•Huldrych Zwingli (Reformed): “Forever remained a pure, intact Virgin”!
•John Calvin (Reformed): Argued Matt 1:25 doesn’t prove other children; defended traditional view!
•Thomas Cranmer (Anglican): Upheld on ancient authority!
•Heinrich Bullinger (Reformed): Affirmed the doctrine!
•Philip Melanchthon (Lutheran): Defended against deniers!
•John Wesley (Methodist): “Continued a pure and unspotted virgin”!
•John Gill (Baptist): Supported via Ezekiel interpretation!
Confessions/Denominations (historical):
•Lutheran (Smalcald Articles, Formula of Concord): Ever-virgin!
•Reformed (Second Helvetic Confession): “Ever virgin Mary”!
•Anglican (many traditional/high-church): Common belief!
You can look this up. Just Google it or check Wikipedia. The reformers all believed this. And still to this they the high church teaches this.
Only modern Christian’s in low church started in bigger groups to reduce Mary to what it is to them today: a simple woman, nothing special.
@RevIsaacWirtz The way I understand it and it was explained to me is that it was the chance to fess up and be repentant. It's only when adam through eve under the bus is when he got angry and said, get out
"Who left this mess on the counter?" I ask my children after lunch, knowing full-well that it was them.
I don't really need all that much time to think about how we use language all the time.
