Day 265 of training for Veteran’s Worlds with @BuFuApp: Felt really good on the mat today. I had been doing a heavy lifting day on Monday and wrestling Wednesday and Thursday. Those heavy lunges had been making my legs really sore for days so I’d go into wrestling days noticeably sore. This week I added an extra wrestling day on Monday, a lighter lift on Tuesday and felt much better wrestling today. I’ll do that heavy lift day on Friday and take the weekend to recover. Testing out the new ScrapLife samples. They are insane. Best shoe I’ve ever worn.

Day 263 of training for Veteran’s Worlds with @BuFuApp: Was the right thing to do to go to this HS practice. I’m never going through legit full practices with drilling and live. That was very hard. Like headache and I might puke hard. It was good being able to actually work anything and get to some stuff. Just doing technique with people who can smash me doesn’t give me the same kind of feel. It’s different to take someone down who is trying to actually stop you. Anyone else’s trunk look like this?

Day 262 of training for Veteran’s Worlds with @BuFuApp: Back to Colorado. Practice tomorrow night. Going to a literal HS club practice. Awkward but whatever it takes. Drilling one on one and working on technique stuff is obviously helpful but not a real practice. Almost all of my mat time is with Deron, who would obviously dog walk me if he tried. It’s not the same when literally every takedown you ever get someone is letting you. Hopefully this helps get more of a live look.

The point of @BuFuApp is to provide wrestlers with more flexibility to train. There are 99 gyms across the country open for everyone. There are over 3,000 training partners on there. I am in California and there is someone literally a mile away. There are also 300+ coaches.

Day 261 of training for Veteran’s Worlds with @BuFuApp: Have been traveling the past two weekend and took Friday/Saturday/Sunday off. Feel like a monster with that kind of rest. I have about 5 months until the Worlds. Will pick the intensity up. Difficult balance between am I doing enough and am I doing too much. Visited a cool record store in San Francisco. Something I’ve always loved about music, sports, technology is the home run potential. One great run to go from zero to hero. Often think about how Slash and Axl Rose were living in a literal storage unit when they were making Appetite for Destruction. That kind of stuff. Have some faith.

Day 260 of training for Veteran’s Worlds with @BuFuApp: Out in San Francisco for the weekend. Taking some rest. Was on the mat twice last week and lifted twice. Think I’ll be good at two lifts a week and three days wrestling. Getting an extra day wrestling next week.

Day 258 of training for Veteran’s Worlds with @BuFuApp: Tried to break down practice the following way today. Not practical to do every day, don’t get very deep into stuff. But was able to identify a couple areas where I am really weak and can focus more in depth on them tomorrow. Front head offense is terrible. Sliding around the mat like a moron. Drags were good. Still have bad habits closing the gap reaching with my lead hand. Gut defense getting better.

Day 255 of training for Veteran’s Worlds with @BuFuApp: I had the unique experience of spending five years on staff with two different NFL teams, including the Giants a season removed from winning the Super Bowl. That put me in very close proximity to some great coaches and athletes who have accomplished incredible things. Was reflecting today on some stuff these guys do day-to-day that I am not doing. Tom Coughlin was very regimented. Each minute of the day was planned strategically. I am not structuring my practices that way. I kind of wing it. I don’t have recurring timed blocks to focus on the areas I know I need to work on. Guys in the NFL spend more time in the classroom watching film as they do on the practice field. I never record myself wrestling. They eat right but are not psychopaths. I remember Justin Tuck being pissed at the notion that the kitchen was planning on taking red velvet cake off the cafeteria menu on Fridays. I am neurotic about it. Anyone can be beaten. Take the ingredients where you can get them.

Day 253 of training for Veteran’s Worlds with @bufuapp: I need to do a better job recharging my battery. I am working out like a dog. Feel like said battery is constantly between 0-10%. Hard to feel out the situations where I need to push through something hard and when to back off. Taking a day or two to relax. Physically sore today. Neck, shoulders. Out in Austin for a graduation. Random guy saw me wearing this and stopped to say “Wow, Bergen Catholic, great wrestling program.” Middle of Texas. Love to see that.

Day 252 of training for Veteran’s Worlds with @BuFuApp: Total slop today. Felt tired and weak. No power. Feet felt slow. Not good. More food and more rest. And more reps where I need them. Par terre felt alright. I have no interest in behind some Rudy type. Great job for trying. I can hang with great wrestlers and I want to win a medal. Desperately.

Day 251 of training for Veteran’s Worlds with @BuFuApp: Snowed in today (?) so did some cardio at home. Treadmill, elliptical back and forth with the stair stepper and bike rotating just my arms and just my legs. Ate like a pound of salmon today. Equally as grumpy as 2,900 calories a day as I was at 2,100 and 2,400 which raises the possibility that it may have never been the food and I am actually just an asshole.
