Interesting circumstances for both on their first match on clay of the season, Tien has very limited experience on it since he milked US hardcourt challengers last year whilst Michelsen is absolutely horrible on clay with his last match being an 6-1 6-0 6-2 defeat vs De Minaur and has a 3-7 w/l atp record on it ( 30% WR ). Now they face off against each other in Houston, which is a relatively fast clay court but still has the higher bounce which Michelsen doesn’t like to much he prefers contactpoints below shoulder height to redirect shots hence why he does way better on hardcourt. Meanwhile I think Tien can really become a clay court beast, he moves well has a great forehand with lots of spin, has good touch, moves incredibly well, has great rally tolerance all things you need to succeed on clay. Even in basic circumstances I would lean Tien, but adding on top of that we have Michelsen who suffered food poisoning in Acapulco who lost 7kgs because of it suffering physically for some weeks followed by giving up against Medvedev in IW and a horrible loss vs Ugo Carabelli in Miami. I think Tien can really make this a dog fight, he can force Michelsen to play lots & lots of balls and really test him physically - I believe Tien’s wins a set for sure and if this goes 3 in these circumstances I trust Tien way more - he really impressed me vs Fonseca and I believe this match will be the start of a great clay season for him! ❤️ LIKE if you are tailing! He’s facing a way better returner in Djokovic now but I still expect him to get plenty of aces in these humid quick conditions and to get to atleast 1 breaker which makes this hc line pretty secure imo just need a 4/6 4/6 L at the worst, they met once in 2024 with Djokovic winning in 3 sets so Mensik isn’t afraid of the challenge that’s for sure! 🇫🇷 Herbert facing off vs the Portugese Rocha, the frenchman is in great form winning an indoor hc title 2 weeks ago before transitioning flawlessly to the clay in 🇮🇹 dominating 2 matches before choking against Pellegrino, great week nontheless and gave him more time to prepare for this tournament which is more important with more points & prize money on the line as he wants to get back in to the top 100. Rocha on the other hand gave up mid February vs Cachin and hasn’t looked good since, losing his last 2 matches on clay very cheaply 2&3 and 4&2 vs Fucsovics & Neumayer respectively.
