Francesco Farioli has been crowned champion of Portugal with FC Porto this weekend. Three seasons at elite European clubs like Nice, Ajax, and Porto are enough to assess his game model. Farioli has a very clear and effective approach, and he has applied it consistently season after season. There are some interesting stats that represent his model well. For three consecutive seasons, his teams have conceded the fewest goals in the league, averaging less than one goal per game each year. His teams are very strong defensively. Across these three seasons, possession numbers have also been very similar (around 55%). While these are solid figures, it is clear that full control of the ball is not his main objective, as there are always three or four teams in the league with higher possession. Finally, in terms of shots, his teams consistently average around 11 per game, very stable figures across seasons, but lower than those of other top teams, which suggests they are not a high-volume attacking side. In terms of structure, his ideas are very clear both offensively and defensively. A 4-3-3 shape is used in attack, while a 5-4-1 is the main defensive structure. In his 4-3-3, we often see narrow fullbacks operating in the half-spaces, while wrong-footed wingers are a constant feature giving depth and width on the last line. There is one positional defensive midfielder acting as an anchor, one more physical number 8, and one number 10 who specializes in playing between the lines. Without the ball, the defensive midfielder drops into the back line to form a back five, while the attacking midfielders must become a double pivot. This allows the team to transition smoothly from a 4-1-4-1 into a 5-4-1. A clear trait of Farioli’s teams is their automatisms. Coming from Italian school, he treats goal kicks like set pieces, with very defined mechanisms to beat the opposition press. There are similarities with De Zerbi’s 4-2-4 build-up structures, as well as with the automatisms typical of Conte’s teams, such as wrong-footed wingers making inside diagonal passes. There is also a strong emphasis on third-man automatisms to find the free player. When attacking, there is a high level of positional discipline and rigidity, with some rotations, mainly between fullbacks, wingers, and attacking midfielders. Rest defense and being organized with the ball is extremely important for Farioli, more than fluidity. At times, his teams can look predictable due to this emphasis on structure and organization with the ball. This also helps explain why they are not among the most productive attacking teams, but consistently among the best defensively. Football is always about trade-offs. A similar situation occurs with the idea of protecting the defensive line by shifting into a back five. At times, this means accepting less possession and being pinned back by the opposition. This helps explain why Porto may not appear as dominant as teams like Sporting CP or Braga in Portugal. In matches against them, Porto has often had only 40–45% possession. However, this does not mean Farioli’s teams are not possession-oriented or capable of pressing high. Rather, prioritizing rest defense, organization with the ball, and back-five protection naturally comes with certain trade-offs. There is another interesting aspect of Farioli’s model worth mentioning: player profiling in the attacking midfield positions. If he wants to attack in a 4-3-3 but defend in a 5-4-1, there can be challenges in forming the double pivot out of possession. For example, if he uses two players like Rodrigo Mora and Gabri Veiga, both specialists between the lines, it is not ideal for them and the team to function as a defensive double pivot. Farioli has addressed this by using a balance: combining a more physical profile, like Fofana, with a more creative player such as Mora or Veiga. Froholdt represents a hybrid between both profiles, which is why he has been so important for Farioli. If you use two physical midfielders, you gain defensive stability but lose quality in the final third. If you do the opposite, you may lack physicality out of possession. Farioli has found a solution by mixing profiles, although this approach may still have a certain ceiling for higher levels. I’m very interested to see Farioli’s second year at a club. It could follow a similar evolution to Luis Enrique’s model at PSG, initially very positionally rigid, but with more fluidity and rotations added within the structure in the second season. If there is one thing that is clear already, it is that Farioli’s game model is effective. Structure and clarity may reduce spontaneity, but they bring something very valuable: consistency over time. Sometimes, the greatest strength lies in having a clear idea, simplifying the game for players, maximizing their potential within very specific roles, and building a collective structure where everyone fully understands their responsibilities. Players know exactly what is required of them in every phase of the game, and training focuses on repeating and mastering those functions. Over time, this creates clarity not only for the players and the team, but also for recruitment, as the club develops a much clearer understanding of which profiles best fit the model. At just 37 years old, Francesco Farioli has the potential to become one of the best coaches in the world.
