13 Years ago, Bob Apel and I published a thought piece on criminal justice reform based on the economic concept of signaling. It has been cited 456 times. But, often non-economists tell me that they find signalng hard to grasp.

If you are estimating treatment effects, you really should check that in your data, your model has a reasonable chance of detecting them, has well calibrated type 1 error rates, low type S error, etc. This tool makes that easy.

Randomized evaluations are possible IRL, because resources are not unlimited. Resources did not allow lawyers at every hearing- so the court let us do random assignment to shifts. The result is a clear and unambiguous finding. @Arnold_Ventures @stuartbuck1

Having a lawyer at the bail hearing matters - even if the hearing is short and appears perfunctory. People with lawyers were released without bail more often than those without. Public defenders make a difference.
